Hence the "Or" - I figured I'd just clarify the point. Sorry if it came across poorly...

The bile nuetralizes the HCl before it enters the small intestines, so that it doesn't screw up your blood chemistry. HCl in your stomach is never all that concentrated. Throwing up would (does) sting if you've just eaten something acidic, but it's not that bad. It's not like you have Alien Blood ™ in you.

Sorry to crap all over this parade, but the original post of this thread is nonsense. Utter nonsense. Your body maintains itsself at the correct pH level, just like your temperature. This is like saying you should sleep in hot water to keep your body too hot for bacteria.

A strong acid is one where nearly 100% of the H+ ions are dissociated in water. A weak acid is one where nearly 100% are not dissocated. There is no in-between. If the H+ react with something to produce a precipitate, more H+ ion dissociate to maintain equilibrium. Therefore, the difference between strong and weak acids is really just reaction speed at equal concentrations. Acetic acid is what makes vinegar sour. Sulfuric acid is what you find in lead car batteries. Dilute sulfuric acid might turn your skin red over time. COncentrated sulfuric acid will boil if you stick your hand in it. Dilute acetic acid gives your salad a tangy zing. Glacial acetic acid (acetic acid dissolved by itsself, that is to say, anhydrous acetic acid is a fluid that will dissociate itsself) can eat your arm off.

Hmm. I've actually been doing a bit more studying on it and I believe that Septimius is more correct; however I suppose it can never hurt to help it along, hmm?
