Inauguration

Postby RocketGirl » Tue Jan 20, 2009 5:03 am

Doesn't "inauguration" sound like something that's not happening? Like 'invalid', 'inedible' or 'invulnerable'?
You know...like every day up until now, the president-elect has been augurated, but tomorrow is having his auguration status revoked. He's having inaugurant applied to him.

I'm sure it's more like 'insure' or 'inflame', something that is happening, but even then, you never really hear what the word 'augurate' means. I mean 'sure' and 'flame' are real words, but...'augurate'?
Well, looking it up, it actually IS related to 'augury', though a few steps removed from fortunate-telling...I guess an augury used to be cast when a new leader was presented or something, thus...their inauguration.

...which means that the swearing in of a president is a frickin' pagan ritual! How do you like that! And given that it's usually done with a frickin' hand on the bible, well...that irony tickles me just a bit; I wonder what uber-religious types would think of that little tidbit.

Anyway...I, um...think about this stuff too hard. It's why you love me. ;)

Don't say things like that; I'm tempted to take it as a challenge.

But 90% of the people here are gay!
so there's a high school football coach sittin on the couch,
with a toothpick in his mouth.
and the stray dog won't forget the day,
he tricked him with a chocolate shake. (little trick)

What percentage of that 90% are female?

Not to derail the MANTRAIN, but "inaugurate" comes from the Latin inaugurare, which means "to perform divination".

Isn't that essentially what I said in the OP?

When Bush turned to shake Obama's hand I could swear I saw a bootprint on his ass.

Just walked in the front door as he was being sworn in, pretty good timing even if I do say so myself.

The confusion with the prefix 'in-' (inflammable means flammable?) comes from Latin and Greek. The Latin 'in', by itself, means in/on/into/onto, which is the source of words like 'inquire' (when these words moved to French from which many words in English descend the prefix was changed to 'en'; in English many of the prefixes change back to 'in' to conform with the Latin, but not all, hence inquire/enquire). The Latin 'in-' prefix comes from both the Latin 'in' and the Greek 'an-' meaning 'not' (hence 'anonymous' means 'not named'), which leads to an ambiguity in both Latin and English over the meaning of 'in'.
If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. (Revelation 2:5, NIV)

Well, drat.

You know how they say great minds think alike? Pooh; I say great minds think like nobody else, which is what makes them great.
An' three of us thought of this independently of each other. So...well, hmph. :?

I'm just sayin'...
