In a lot of places, it's not just a flag, an open fire is illegle as a safty hazard. Burning one inside would cause smoke damage, and outside would catch trees on fire.

okay, I googled for it and it doesn't seem like the law was passed, but I remember him talking about it on his blog (why would he have posted pictures of him burning a flag the day before the law was set if the law wasn't going to become a law?)

Some Republicans tried to get a Constitutional amendment passed, I remember that much, but I don't remember anything about a law. Most likely it was just his state, or he was acting on a rumor that had been blown out of proportion via the Internet. Political stuff tends to get distorted in the "blogosphere."

As far as burning the flag and respect for it and all that... I read a "Prickly City" strip once that I think has the right attitude. Normally the strip is blatantly, even obnoxiously, right-wing, but this time the cartoonist hit the mark by giving the strip's token liberal, Winslow, the last word: "People don't need an amendment; they need manners." Messing with the laws/Constitution to do away with flag burning isn't going to prove anything, or win anyone over to your cause, but neither is burning the flag in the first place.

No, the confedrate flag is not a representation of anyhting so other than general fire laws it is not illegle to burn one.

About flag burning, I couldn't care one way or the other. If for some reason I was going to protest the government or a country I wouldn't burn its flag as some vague symbol, that's liable to be grossly misinterpreted. I'd choose other paths to get my point across.

According to this, the amendment has yet to pass. Even if it gets through the legislature there is little chance of it being ratified. If it does, I'm gonna buy a few dozen flags.
