What does zomg mean?

I know omg is Oh my god but what in the name of the almighty bob is the "z" for?

I've wondered about that myself. Let's see what Wikipedia has to say:

Quote:

ZOMG is a bastardization of the Internet shorthand term for 'Oh My God', OMG. The term is commonly used to express humorously overwrought excitement and as a way of mocking internet slang as a whole. It has appeared on various websites and message boards, often associated with a 'witty' remark or trolling, and was spotted in use as early as 1996. It is reasonably widespread today in the online anime and gaming communities, and is often used in its more ironic sense on internet pop-culture forums such as Fark.

Because it is a form of written slang and is not commonly used in oral conversation, there is no standard pronunciation. Attempts to pronounce it include /zɑmdʒ/, /zɑmgə/, /zoʊ ɛm dʒiː/, /zɑmdʒiː/, /ziː~zɛd oʊ ɛm dʒiː/, /ziː~zɛd oʊ maɪ gɑd/, or /zoʊ maɪ gɑd/.

Usage

ZOMG is often followed by a variation of LOL or by an excessive series of exclamation points trailing into a numerical '1'. This last convention implies the typist's ineptitude in creating a simple exclamation mark. A common addition to the previous scenario is to append the word 'one' after the numerical '1', e.g., "ZOMG!!!!!!1111one". In each case, the (self-deprecating) implication is that the typist lacks the wherewithal to type correctly.

In gaming communities, ZOMG is often followed by "hax", and cries of ZOMG hax! and the like may be heard when a player does anything especially impressive, implying (ironically or otherwise) that the player must be hacking the game to do so well.

ZOMG also possibly originated from BBS chatroom emote commands such as zlaugh, zcry, etc.

Also, leaning more toward implying the inability to type properly, the z in zOMG could be a mistype on the way to pressing the shift key to caplitalize OMG, considering on a standard QWERTY keyboard the z key is right next to the shift key.

Eh, I've always seen it as one of those things people add or take away, just for the heck of it. AFAIK, there's no meaning behind the z, like there's no meaning for the p in pwned. Just sprang up when people started mistyping owned.

And "zom-guh" is easier to say than "om-guh".

>.> <.<

What?! It takes one heck of a typo to get a Z in there, at least one the keyboards I've seen. Me, I use very few bastardizations. I hate meaningless things. They make me feel like life is meaningless....

Actually, now that I think of it, the Z is right next to Shift, so if they're not using Caps Lock when they write "OMG"...

Funny, most people I meet in chatrooms don't even bother with the Shift key. Hmm...

On a side note, now that I finally have an avatar, it (still) won't load! Sorry to bring the thread back on topic like that.

<!--emo&

Still mostly here.
Incidentally, I don't bother with the shift key either, except when I need it to type a sybol I would be unable to create otherwise.

In normal typing, I capitalise by toggling caps-lock on and off very quickly. I don't do this intentionally, but it's something of a strange legacy from my probably typewriter days as a young child which has become part of the way I type.

on (current) topic:

whoamg!
