The B&W comics are GIFs, yes. The colour ones used to be JPEGs, though.

Probably because GIFs cause color loss during saving.

well, PNGs can be compressed as much as possible and not lose any quality. that's why I always use them.

If DC Simpson did his comics as bitmaps, a normal weekday stripmight be over 100kb. The Special Sunday ones would be over 1mb.
