I kind of assumed that the squirrel girl didn't tar and feather him all by herself. Nevertheless, Ozy might be passive enough that she could. That's a pretty funny image.

This strip was based on my own experience with jury duty.<br><br>I was in a jury pool about five years ago, for a case involving a guy accused of selling crack. During the jurt selection process, I was the only juror willing to acknowledge that there were racial politics involved in the issue (the defendant was black), and I got into a brief argument with the prosecuting attorney about what the term "reasonable doubt" meant. I also openly declared that I disagreed with US drug policy. (Hey, I was 22.)<br><br>She struck me from the pool at her first opportunity. And everyone else who had shown any knowledge or opinions also got struck by one lawyer or the other.<br><br>Meanwhile, this one lady who said she had never really met any black people before, and didn't know anything about crack, was still in the room when I left.<br><br>Footnote to this story: I hung around the courthouse for an extra day after that, believing my name was still on the list for another jury. I have never had jury duty thanks to having been in college until last year, but living in the District of Columbia means they'll try to get you a lot. (They prefer to weed all the lawyers from the pool, you know.) My mom has been called far more often than most people. The longest she's served on a jury was two weeks, but now she may have to serve six to eight weeks.<br><br>Once in the past, she told the judge truthfully that she so wanted to spend time with her family again that she would go with whatever opinion was in the majority (think of that baseball guy from <i>12 Angry Men</i>). When she didn't cave to the judge's pressure, he struck her from the pool. Her father had a different truthful way to avoid jury: he said he assumed all defendants to be guilty. (My mom didn't share many opinions with her dad.) Now she's reaching for tactics like drooling. I keep insisting that she take the Llewellyn approach.

I've only been called for jury duty once. I was struck from the pool the first day, probably because I was barely awake. I worked a night shift at the time, and of course the court starts business at 8 or so in the morning. I was quite groggy.<br>

The Netherlands doesn't use juries, and I think I like it this way.
