Hehehe, Ozy looks cute as a babby.
From the looks of things, no, Shelly is probably not dead or anything. She probably just wasn't ready for the whole single-parenthood thing.
Now the question is, who is Ozy's mysterious father?
Who sleeps shall awake, greeting the shadows from the sun
Who sleeps shall awake, looking through the window of our lives
Waiting for the moment to arrive...
Show us the silence in the rise,
So that we may someday understand...

Awww, Ozy was such a cute babby! And quite well mannered too. A lesser one might be tempted to cry, finding happiness outside of himself. Such serenity would make a Zen master proud, or maybe jealous, nah, maybe just curious about whether there was an easier way all along .

I'd be willing to guess that DCS has made several small adjustments to strips after they were posted.

Probably the biggest change DCS has ever gone back and corrected was May 10, 2002. In his "filler strip" on Dec. 11 2003, he shows that he accidentaly forgot to draw Llewellyn's wings in the middle panel. The mistake has been corrected in the original strip. Incidently, the downloadable archive contains both versions.

I must question why Llewellyn is referring to her in past-tense. (I.E.: "was")

While most of you don't think DCS would introduce "death" into the comic, I wouldn't say never. It was already talked about briefly (here), and it wouldn't surprised me if it came up again. Remember, this strip personifies philosophy in a sort of cartoon-ish way, but it often strikes me at as rather mature and deep, like a wise old grandparent dishing out random bits of wisdom and advice (a.k.a, "Llewellyn). It isn't some first-grade level cartoon strip for six year olds. If you notice, most loyal fans are well over 13+ years, and by then, I hope you can at least understand and accept the aspect of life and death.

Llewellyn does come off as silly sometimes, and is known to speak in riddles, however he does not strike me as the type to disrespect the dead. I think it is entirely possible that he may have known Ozy's mother, or father, or maybe both, but if he did and they're dead, then I honestly don't think he would disrespect their memory.

So realistically, I don't believe she is alive. However if there is a chance, even a small chance, I hope she is alive, and that she may possibly become a regular character. I also wouldn't discount whomever Ozy's father turns out to be if he does indeed show up some time, so keep your hopes up.

Technically, DCS is Ozy's father. In the sense that he is the father of the strip.

...

...

what?

I wonder what it would be like to have a comic strip where the characters worshipped you, the creator of the comic.

...I bet it'd be redundant. Realistic, but redundant.

Alright, forgive me for being unobservant, but what exactly do the phrases "fourth wall" and "breaking the fourth wall" mean?

The "fourth wall" is the separation between our world, and that portrayed by any work of fiction. To break the fourth wall is for the characters in the story to acknowledge that there is another world - ours - watching them.

At least, that's my interpretation.
