it will not let me read that one. I open it and it loads and then dissapears. this is strange. Edit: I finally got it to display. I am not sure which part of that article I am more appalled at.

I question the validity of any experiment that could "accidentally" produce a thinking being. I view that being self-aware and thinking are the qualifications for personhood - though they are vague at this point - and one shouldn't just add cells and "see what happens" if there is a good chance that the resulting creature might qualify as a person. <img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... ns/dry.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='dry.gif' /> While there is some research value there, there's a lot of unknowledged risks in the experiment.

I'm not so worried about the possibility of "accidentally" creating a sentient being (which I think is rather unrealistic) as I am about the welfare of these animals. Human biochemistry is different from that of animals. Sheep need different livers than us because they live different lives. It's far more likely that an animal would die painfully from having the wrong organs than it is that an animal would suddenly start moralizing about things and making up stories to explain phenomena. I think this research is cruel. Eventually humans are gonna kill themselves. Either by creating creatures not of nature, or by blowing up the world. I'm waiting for scientists to create an injection that would alter human DNA. THEN we'll have some real s**t to deal with.

We already have that. It's called gene therapy. And for the record, organisms like corn and bulldogs are very different from their unaltered state*. *or, more precisely, not-altered-by-humans state. All life on Earth is changing. That's evolution.

Yea but Evolution is a natural process. I think we as Humans are forcing something that is going to end up bitting us in the end. (sorry about that bad pun) I look at it this way. It is bad to mess with nature. Nature has a habit of giving worse than it gets. And what of the animlas. they didn't ask for this. I am sure they are quite happy as they are. Now the moral of it. Do we have the right to play god like this. We are not god and never will be. One part that gets me is that if the mice start to exibit human tendendices then they will be killed. We made them like that and then kill them. In the end if we end up making animals that are as smart as us(that we can detect) and use them it will end up as slavery and that I cannot agree with. Like I said the whole thing is appaling to me.

Yeah, if they do make a big hairy ugly domesticated human-dog that could understand orders then ka-boom! The army would come in and give money to the scientists to make more and better ones to use in the millitary and that'd be just terrible for the animals. Though it seems kinda extreme it'd really suck if that happened.

Though it should probably be noted at this point that about 6-12 months ago there was a bbc3 animated comedy ('I Am Not An Animal' in case anyone wants to look it up) about a group of animals with human brains and speach who were rescued from a pampered life in an animal experimentation lab by a group of animal activists. At the time I seem to recall thinking 'funny comedy, but no way in hell could anything like this ever really occur'. And... Then this shows up. And... Um. BSP. It wouldn't be the first time an army used animals as soldiers. Though the only two times I can recall it spectacularly backfired. Both the American bats with napalm waist-coats, which due to the winds changing flew back to the American base before exploding and the Russian dogs trained to seek food on the underbelly of tanks, with C4 strapped to their backs in actual battle... Who... Only recognised Russian tanks as being where to find food. Both unfortunate events (the using animals as weapons, rather than the poetic justice in both situations)

I believe seals or dolphins or some creatures were trained to detect underwater mines. Probably dolphins.
