Ether the kitten is a metaphor for something, or it's just a story and it's not supposed to make sense, just be really beautiful.

The way I saw it, I rather interpreted the kitten as a calming spirit, like the furry incarnation of someone who has always been there for the narrator. Perhaps it was an imaginary friend, a brother or sister, a favorite song or text, some religious verse, the subtle blowing of the wind that somehow gives you a reassuring buffet upon your back, a guardian angel, or maybe even the presence of god. Regardless of its true form, the kitten provided a metaphor that we could relate in this manner.
