I wasn't really sure what forum this would be best in, so I decided to place it here. If it's in the wrong place, I'm sure it'll be moved.

Anyways, this is something odd I wrote tonight when I should have been doing homework. Let me know what you think.

The Kitten

Back many years, when I was a young lad,
Whenever I was feeling really sad,
Wherever I was, I would find the kitten there,
With blue eyes so kind and soft orange fur so fair,
That as I scratched behind her soft ears,
A warm, gentle wind would blow and dry my tears.

In days of yore, while I was still quite young,
Inside my mind many fears always clung,
And whenever I felt sure they would not relent,
The kitten would arrive, and cause them to repent,
And as I stroked her glistening fur,
My dark fears were absorbed by her purr.

During my prime I attended college,
And always pushed my mind to its edge,
Often stress would encumber me, and prevent rest;
Then the kitten would come, and wag her tail with zest,
And she would lie idly on my pillow,
And with her eyes she made me feel mellow.

Half my life ago, I was off to war,
To serve my proud country despite the gore,
It was not what I expected, and feared death,
And when panicked, the kitten slowed my breath,
No longer did I ache for home and cry,
For the kitten knew that I would not die.

Years ago, when my wife passed away,
I felt sure the grief would forever stay,
But as always, the kitten came to ease the pain,
And within those crystal eyes my sorrow was slain,
The happy memories of my wife stayed,
But to grief for her my mind never strayed.

Today I am old, touched by ages,
And I reflect on life and its stages,
I wonder where the kitten is, it has been years,
Since she came, and since I had to cry any tears,
I wonder often of her mystery,
And why she captured my misery.

It is late when at long last I retire,
Suddenly it is sleep that I desire.
Before sleep takes me, I feel her paws on my chest.
I look at her, asking why she kept me from rest,
Moonlight shone in, reflecting off of her,
And I saw her look at me and not stir.

Her eyes locked with mine, and I then knew,
I was not going to pass the night through,
That was why she had returned to me that night,
I worried not, but just held her gently yet tight,
And her silky purr now told me to sleep,
For she would be there for those who would weep.

The next day the elderly man was found,
He was in his bed and made not a sound,
His son had been the one who found him in his bed,
And wept when he realized his father was dead,
Then the cute orange kitten caught his sight,
And he knew he would surely be alright.

Thank you; thank you all who have read this so far for your comments. I'm not sure really what to say right now. I had never expected to get such a reaction from anything I wrote, so your comments have meant a lot to me. *hands Kles a tissue*

As for an encore, I'll think on it and see what I come up with. Thanks again everybody.

Phauxe, that was a very touching poem. I really love the emotion you poured into it and the warm feeling that you gave into those moments gives this real sense of peace in turmoil. I also appreciate the very lyrical structure you gave it, and the imagery is superb.

In short, I love that poem.

Thank you all again. As I said, I never expected this type of reaction, but it is most welcomed. As for an encore, I have given it thought and decided that I won't be doing one. I don't want to rush another work and take the risk of having it be a let-down, though I don't know if I'll ever be able to create something like this again.

I'll be writing more, I can assure you, and when I do I will post them here first.

Yeah, don't work too hard to make another one. In my experience, you gotta let life inspire you to make your writing for you, and forcing it out only stifles it.

Not meaning to be a party pooper, but...

...How did the kitten stay a kitten for so darn long? Was it like, the chosen of Bastet or something?

But that was pretty good. Don't listen to my comments, stuff is boring if it makes sense.

Don't worry about it; I was sure someone was going to bring that up. As for the answer, I don't know. I purposly avoided that entirely and decided it would be best to leave it up to the reader to interpret. Besides, if it was explained, a lot of the feel of the peom may have been lost.

So the answer is I have no idea.
