One thing I'd definitely do is offer big tax incentives for companies that make hybrid cars (the amount being proportional to the number of cars they sell that get more than 40 miles per gallon). I'd also like to do something to encourage companies to use more recyclable materials in their products. And I'd pour WAY more money into the alternative-fuel project than Bush did. This can't wait much longer; practically everyone claims we're gonna run out of oil in the next century.

As for Iraq, I have no idea what to do with them. I don't claim to be a genius. I'll just find someone who has good credentials and a good idea and make him Secretary of Defense and turn Iraq over to him. Any suggestions?

Most importantly, I would never take myself too seriously. I'd keep in touch with what people think about me, even those who think I'm an alien sent here to wreak havoc on our supply of syrofoam. I'll even watch the skits about me on SNL. If I'm not too busy.

Oh, and of course I'd go on TV and plug Ozy and Millie to no end.

The only issue i'd go after seriously would be environment and those matters directly linked to it. I don't have any faith in any system to enact any lasting change so i might as well put some protection/advancement in the area that most concerns me before i'm shot by some lone gunman.

Only thing is that for Iraq I would forumulate a plan to train them to defend themselves/run their own government. I would also try to get other countries to assist in this. I wouldn't just pull out all of our troops and leave the place a mess. Bush did mess up, but it's up to whoever is elected next to try to fix it (if Bush gets elected again, I don't even want to think about how bad things could get).
Education reform would be what I would do. And I don't mean Test Every Child Every Week or whatever, but actually give schools enough money to actually educate students. We don't want to raise our kids to be stupid people, Lord knows there's enough stupid people in this country (and the world) already.
I would want to help people try to earn a living... one way to help would be to raise pay, but since that also raises the cost of living, the best solution requires that people earn more. This requires training and education.

I would want to take care of the general stupidity in the nation... this also requires an effective education. Encouraging tax breaks for people actively trying to learn is an incentive to improve. Education has to be improved and encouraged at all levels, and so a financial break for teaching jobs would also be recommended.

Everything in life needs to become more efficient. Trying to tighten the reins on budget would be necessary. Government-funded programs must be closely audited to ensure they are working exactly as promised; if they cannot do their job effectively, money is being wasted. In essence, the IRS would have to really crack down on programs that perform below a certain level. Unfortunately, good leadership is scarce (look who we have to choose from in the presidency!), so I will need to find some individuals who are good at reforming programs to help get them back in shape.

In trying to improve the quality of life around the states, some sacrifices may need to be made, at least as far as oil and cars are concerned.. (okay, so I'm biased against SUVs, those gas-guzzling personal tanks that soccer moms like to use for personal commuting and rich guys that like to either brag or overcompensate, I do not wish to find out which). Letting gasoline prices rise to closer match worldwide market prices would help, but not if it happens too suddenly. I'd suggest allowing those increases to happen gradually to encourage people to increase their miles per gallon (and thus miles per dollar), but also increase the fees gasoline producers must pay such that their profit margins will not be greater than they would be without those increases. These fees would go towards a program that would actively encourage the production of more efficient, affordable vehicles, and put excessive wastefulness in the hands of those who are willing to pay more for it.. This would mean higher costs across the board, more government control, and result in complaints by users of less efficient vehicles, but it will vastly reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Because this will also result in the reduction of global oil prices, it will have to be watched very closely to avoid excessive instability.

As far as the war effort's concerned, I'd want to let the war come to a definite conclusion (any sane person would!) in which Iraq is able to protect itself and we are able to protect ourselves. Obviously, it cannot do it until the number of Iraqi soldiers defending it can match the Americans already do so. The logical method is to find out how many of us it takes, and then to maintain that level of defense as we replace the Americans with trained Iraqis. If other countries are willing to help out, I have no desire to turn them down.

I'd want to raise more intelligence to see who is still a threat out there in the world... Osama? Another member of Al Qaeda? Someone who is already sheltered in our borders? A country that is poised for destroying itself in a blaze of shame by arming itself and experimenting with nuclear technology? Certainly they will need to be handled based on how much of a threat they can be.

What of marriage? I really think television shows that have cheapened what marriage is to the average person is a complete disservice to it as a whole. I'd have to figure out what the people want before I can make the proper decision there. There are way too many facets of it... I personally disapprove of gay marriage, but because my disapproval is based in religion, it doesn't mean I have the right to stop any of you from making that decision. But does it mean I should encourage it either? No. I think the big issue here is whether people who enter a union should receive some government benefit for it.

Unfortunately, there have probably been many heterosexual couples that have married just for a tax break and to be able to claim benefits a pair of people could not have had otherwise. Allowing two people of the same gender to have a government-recognized marriage also encourages that, like letting roommates who wouldn't normally consider marrying each other for romantic or social reasons to try to cash in just because there's some loophole. Unfortunately, I cannot dictate the meaning of love, and so I wouldn't. As an alternative, I may wish to cut back on the special privileges and benefits granted to all marriages to discourage the erosion of its sanctity by people trying to cash in. This would be implemented before the question of gay marriages could be resolved, so people will not be tempted to choose based on money.

Healthcare.. I'm not sure what to do for that, so I'll have to hold out until I can give a more informed plan for that.

Hm.. about Social Security. Changes will be made, and while it will mean people will have to pay for it, it doesn't have to be paid for immediately. It is merely a matter of trying to ensure that people get the money we promised them, and trying to close the gap between what the government can get from the people and what they can get back at retirement. There is no real solution unless either a: the money can be put somewhere where it can earn higher interest or b: people are willing to accept the amount their money actually collects over time.

Um.. now I guess once that's done, I can have the place decorated in Purple, encourage the nerds to be more outstanding, and see if we can promote a national pie. Oh, and try to declassify junk so the conspiracy theorists can have something to gnaw on while I plot quietly outside of their view.... Oh.. did I just say that aloud? Um.. heh..
