I can't draw

If I might make a few suggestions:

You should keep the drums. They add a more exciting, syncopated beat that the piece needs, since it's in a very restricted one note per beat 4/4 kind of thing.
You should also keep the Bass line. The more instruments you can subtley integrate, the more rich the piece will sound. The bass fills in a lot of the gaps left by the steady beat of the melody.
On the topic of your melody, about 1/4 and 1/2 of the way through the piece, the melody reaches a higher octave. The instrument sound changes very noticably. You might try actually changing instruments either at these junctions or for the entire piece to avoid that, since it disturbs the flow of the piece.
In my personal opinion, this piece has a lot of great potential. A few minor tweaks will leave you with a far more fulfilling track. Also, and this is just my opinion and I completely realize you might disagree, and you'd be right, since you're the composer, but I liked the faster tempo versions better.
Well, my first attempt at turning a tune in my head into a MIDI... To go along with a story I was writing, I wrote this.. actually, until I master the software Burning Sheep Productions shared in that link of his, the timing of the MIDI will still be way off, especially in the faster parts.. Past Imagining

The words are as follows; I hope the MIDI is close enough to be able to attach words to the notes correctly:

I see you standing there as lost as I
Where things are not what they may seem.
We will never learn until we try
To live outside this dream.

There are greater things than what's around
All in futures yet untold.
Could you count the worlds that would be found
If you are daring to be bold?

I will sail as far as I can go
Far beyond what can be seen
I will reach for all there is to know
Stretching forth my mind
Until I find
What is past imagining

While there are many paths yet unexplored
Only one can be traversed.
With regret some good ones are ignored
You'll never know if they were worse.

You must find a path that is your own
Set a chart for what you want to see.
And if you choose to never be alone
May you choose to be with me.

So we can sail as far as we can go
Braving what the course may bring
We can reach for all there is to know
Together we can find
While side by side
What is past imagining

What is past imagining.
----------
Sorry.. I was hoping Geocities might allow the link to work properly. Use FoxChild's suggestion if you wish to access it. I'd put it on a page, but it's not an icon, is not really related to O&M, and the page it would be most suited for would be the one with all my poetry, and I haven't had that page updated properly to accept it.

EDIT: I changed the link to point to where it is in the homepage itself.

That pasting thing didn't work for me, you'll have to move from Geocities Travis (can I call you Travis? I think it's a nicer name) there's bazillions of other free webhosts around.

Oh yeah, back to my piece:

You should keep the drums. I updated my homepage so the midi for "Past Imagining" would be accessible from my poetry page.. Because I'm not used to composing, it's a relatively crude attempt at recording the melody, I understand that the tempo, and in some parts the key, is slightly off, but I figured it was close enough to what I wanted it to be to be worth sharing anyway. I might try to clean it up and add more depth to it someday, but for now, this is it.

If anyone wants to know the story behind this song, feel free to ask.

Quote:

Umm, wow what'd you use!?

that was in the program Sonic Foundry Acid. You can DL a free version, one in which you can have up to 10 'loops', and save(but not as a .wav or .mp3). I have Acid Music 3.0. 4.0 is out now, and costs $70 US to get off the shelf. Unlimited loops, and save as pretty much anything. One step up, Acid Pro has an imbedded midi synth. Quite handy that... but that can run ya up to $200.

Thats where the program you put the link to, {edited due to stupidity}Burning Sheep Productions, came in handy. Acid Music can import midi sounds, so i saved various sounds from that program, and now use them in Acid.

to give you an idea of what i did with the piece i put up, that has about 26 loops, with about 22 loops all piano. There are that many so that there can be proper reverb, and 4 simultaneous notes can be played(my limit, not the programs) at the same time without cutting into the other piano loops.
As for drums, thos are only 3 loops. One intro drum roll, the first 4/4 beat, and second, higher energy 4/4 beat.

http://www.acidplanet.com

thats where you would find free loops weekly, and get the unlimited trial version.

I don't go for anything other than midi for now, but when I upgrade from my W95 I may!

And FoxChild, wait, I mean Travi- TAVIS, that song's a'ight, the melody was pretty good, I know how hard it can be, but there were some parts that didn't have as much emotion as I expected. BTW, what'd you use to make it!!?
I really need to know!

Quote:

blacksheepproductions

AHEM!! Pardon?

I was using that Noteworthy Composer software that was linked earlier in this thread.

It'd have worked better if I had learned how to add dynamics to it.. The song is supposed to start out very soft, as though you were speaking to the other lost person.. (Picture someone staring out at a lake at night, alone, listening to the wind as you approach) and then build in volume at the refrain, with the hopes and expectations of announcing what you plan to do with your life. The second verse is supposed to be somewhat muted again, but still relatively strong, gaining momentum from the refrain, and then building with a small peak at "Set a chart for what you want to see". Then with a sharp dip back into a soft voice, it makes an invitation and builds into the refrain again. I would love to get all that in there once I figure out the dynamics of the program, and maybe fill it out with the proper percussions and harmonizing.
