I tried some colouring but it looks messy cos of the grey around the black lines. How do I get them a sort of grey-blue rather than makin it blue, and the lines lookin pixelated or makin them black and gettin the same thing?

To color them, I used a color image as a reference. Now, those color images have all those middle colors at the edges near the lines, soooo.... I simply paste the colored image as a scrap in my workspace. When I have one of those tricky greys I need to color, I use the color picker and try to pick a color from the reference that comes pretty close. Then I simply have to paint all the similarly-colored pixels to match it. No prob. I actually use Photoshop instead of paint. I just think its more flexible. Anyway, what I do is a take the image I want to color and open it in Photoshop. Since that program deals in layers I make a duplicate of the drawing. This leaves me with two layers of the same drawing. On the bottom layer I simply color the entire thing. I do color over the lines slightly to help me in the next step. I then take the top duplicate layer and delete everything in it except the original lines. You can now see the through to the colors on the bottom layer. There is still the gray area around the lines. I simply use the eraser tool on the top layer to touch up the lines. Because I colored over the lines in the bottom layer the erasing on the top layer gives the gray areas a much more natural tone. Thus the lines are now fixed. Thats how I do it.

That is very similar to what I do with Photoshop LE; I'd have mentioned it too but I wanted to restrict the advice to the limited resources of Paint. What I do there is I duplicate the black and white image to a new layer and color the duplicate using stuff like the line tool to border off areas and the paint bucket to fill those areas. When I do the erasing, I don't worry so much about whether parts of the lines are erased or if I lop off a delicate part of the drawing because the bottom layer is an intact line art. By setting the duplicate layer to "Darken", all of the parts that have been colored replace the lighter white and grey spaces, and the remaining dark areas are restored when they merge.
