I don't know if that's a Calvin and Hobbes rip-off. I mean, I used to/still do that in the tub. Cause wave dynamics rock.

Splashes are really hard to draw. I mean, it's one of those things that's hard even to find a decent photo reference for -- you have to be an excellent photographer even to capture it on film, and then there's the matter of capturing it with ink lines and mostly solid colors, and... trust me, it's really hard. I don't think I did a great job here, but I suppose it's adequate.

The punch line here is definitely an afterthought. I think this strip exists because I wanted an artistic challenge.

I also remember DCS mentioning in the online commentary that s/he was pleasantly surprised at the complete lack of religious backlash.

Also also, someone find and repost that shaking Millie animation. I think Ms. Mudd found another opportunity for it.

S/he doesn't think very highly of religious folk, I guess, if s/he anticipated people getting pissed off at a joke like this.

I know it's not a ripoff, necessarily, but the fact that I immediately flashed back to this particular Calvin & Hobbes when I saw the joke... I imagine there was some amount of 'inspiration'.

I find it amusing that DCS complained about being able to draw water in ink and solid colors and the C&H strip looks fantastic in black-and-white. (I'm not going to deny that water is hard to represent in solid colors and ink, I really do know where he was coming from and I'd say it's a lot harder to do it with block colors than just purely black-and-white, but it's just kinda funny.)

I doubt this particular strip could offend the most avid religious fanatics. Unless they would also object to theatrical representations of Biblical stories, such as the three kings coming to see the Christ Child in the manger.

If I recall, DCS said it while rerunning some of the earlier strips. I can't find the reruns so I can't check so we're off the rails on a crazy train and depending on half-remembered anecdotes and firefly dreams. Cause, you know, the archives got all borked or rearranged or something.

Well, I object to that. What, babby Jesus doesn't deserve more than three kings visiting him? It's those kind of secularist humanist rule of three claptrap which has our country in a downward spiral. And only three gifts? I mean, its only the messiah we're talking about and you only bring three gifts? You had to get directions from an astronomical body for crying out loud! And what's with the robes and sandles? You trying to say Jesus was a hippy? Depict the guy in a suit and some Italian leather shoes! He deserves it. He did die for your sins and become part of a complete breakfast.
