One thing everyone should know about civilizations is that, in the end, it honestly doesn't matter who was smarter than who. It sure has an impact, but what really determines who survives and who develops is the available resources. As the introduction (and GGS) explain, the starting line wasn't a "fair" starting line. Location and resources were the major things that determined this. An example of the head starts is shown in Guns, Germs, and Steel, where Jared Diamond says "...Africa enjoyed an enormous advantage: at least 5 million more years of separate protohuman existence than on any other continent." (Diamond, 50) But even with this head start, Africa didn't end up having the greatest influence in the world. Again, it boils down to location and resources. As people migrated from Africa, they found better and worse places, each with their own advantages and disadvantages.
