You should probably try to fill in the empty spaces in the letters.

also, never EVER save in JPEG. each save compresses the image, and the JPEG compression method loses quality. If you save as PNG, there is no quality loss, but it still has a small file size.
That's pretty bad advice, actually. Never use JPEG as the primary version of your file, sure, but JPEGs are pretty useful for images with lots of different colors, like, say, PHOTOS. You know, being created by the Joint Photographic Experts Group and all. For comics, it really depends on the level of color you use. For just black and white, PNG is often better, but for something with many, many different colors, PNG will either be large, or, if 8-bit, have too much color loss, so JPEG comes to the rescue. Assuming the quality is up. I used to hate JPEG, but I got over it and realized JPEGs can be useful, when used properly.

JPEGs tend to introduce artifacting, which is especially noticeable in pictures with large, bold, solid blocks of colour - like comics. For your intermediary format it's advisable to use your image software's native format so that no data is lost on saving (for GIMP, this is .xcf). When you finish your comic I would advise .png rather than .jpg simply because there's no loss of quality and the size difference will be barely noticeable to anybody on a reasonably fast net connection.

I definitely agree that jpeg has its uses, but when sharing your work with other artists, showing them something in jpeg will instantly make them realize that you don't really know crap about making art on the computer.

a lot of people don't know why JPEG is bad, or even what PNG is.

Yeah, I have many friends who I've had to convert to PNG myself, it's not a big deal. Also, from what you've said, you've never even really used much internet before this forum.

I haven't saved in JPG for years.

I dare you to try to play those exercises. I think you'll be surprised to what songs they are.

I play guitar myself but honestly I only slightly know how to read tabs because I've never had any proper lessons or anything. Drums and piano are still more my turf.

But playing guitar is 'effin fun. Especially when you pants around with some very experimental tuning.
Who sleeps shall awake, greeting the shadows from the sun
Who sleeps shall awake, looking through the window of our lives
Waiting for the moment to arrive...
Show us the silence in the rise,
So that we may someday understand...
