The mall creeps me out.

A place to talk about anything (that doesn't belong in the other forums).

Yes it is. I saw on the news that college students been getting bad grades on their papers because they've been using Wiki as a source on their papers. And I don't mean bad by my standards I mean bad by the school's standards.

alright, now see here.
there's a major difference between "using Wikipedia as your only source for learning solid facts" and "using Wikipedia to learn". On the whole, Wikipedia is a website containing facts (as in, truths) about things in all subjects. True, the articles can be edited by almost anyone, but what people don't understand is that vandalism is reverted almost instantly in most cases.
As far as the validity of articles, all important facts on Wikipedia are cited, just like in the papers you write. Any false information a student puts in a paper they wrote using Wikipedia as their source, was their own fault for not doing fact-checking (which, when you're writing importand documents, you're supposed to triple-check your facts anyway). There is abso-pantsless-lutely no problem with Wikipedia.

How about Merriam-Webster? :D
gforce422 is awesome because:
-He made the absolute nicest comments about me in the other topic. I didn't respond to them yet, because I suck, but they are greatly appreciated! =D
-I would say he would also be a good runner up as one of the nicest people alive.
-He joined the IRC sometimes. But not enough, I say! Chat moar =D
-He is evidently only 18 year old but he could easily pass for 25. =D
-He is a drummer like *I* am and this in itself is cool.

Yeah you can't trust wikipedia for what a mall is because you know it will be biased by some in favor of not having a cover on it!

Better not get even basic information from there it will all be so biased!

I usually avoid the mall unless I've got no better ideas for Christmas presents. It's not that I dislike it or anything; I just have no compelling need to go there unless I've got something specific in mind.

I have been driving there a bit more often lately as my friend works there and his car doesn't work...

The only malls I could stand to walk in are the Mecreless and the River Center malls. However the Mecreless was demolished this summer and I only go to the IMAX on school field trips in the River Center Mall.

Is the news trustworthy? They have more potential reason, resources and intention to distribute facts as they want it, however subjectively.

Good call. The news is more biased than the Wiki. Is the Wiki completely accurate? Definitely not, but if schools really care about student education maybe they will pay for Encarta subscriptions for everybody... Or Encyclopedia Brittanica Online...

Why would they do that, Caomhin, when the library does already? I guess in areas more rural than my city they may not, but my county's library has an online subscription to all kinds of journals and encyclopedias, and library cards are of course free.

I'm aware of that but the sad fact is not many people know how to use the library any more. Hell, I'm pretty fuzzy at it. But the problem is they sometimes don't teach the younger generations how to smartly use what they have at their disposal... And no I don't think my school could afford it... But my principal can afford a bright yellow little Italian sportscar... I think its Italian, either way its expensive and its loud and he practically speeds out of there.... Kinda ironic, no?

I think (I'm not entirely sure, but I THINK) I can access the library's database stuff from my home. I might have to drop by and ask them for the latest password, though.
