Don't give Doc too much credit. I've read a similar poem that wasn't a limerick, and I'm pretty sure it predates him.

Even the limerick form is well-known, and is considerably older than me. Although I typed it from memory, I very well could have copied/pasted it from any one of thousands of websites.
