Meh, not really. Can't stand MEHTUL.
PAGING ARLOEST! ARLOEST, YOU ARE NEEDED IN THREAD NUMBER 5480!
Check.
Okay, first of all, you've obviously never heard anything by Zeppelin before, or at least you didn't
know you ever did, since they are not MEHTUL. Yes, they are often classified and regarded as such, and for their time period they
were, but that label does not apply to them anymore. And I don't mean that in the sense of "Oh, the music doesn't quite have the right kick drum rhythm to be classified as speed MEHTUL, so it's more of a 'quick' MEHTUL", I mean they are not MEHTUL at all (by the standards now set). They are not MEHTUL nor do they
sound like MEHTUL. Perhaps they were a little bit on the heavier side in the early 70s, but relative to today's music, Green Day uses higher guitar distortion.
This is their most well known song, Stairway to Heaven. Not MEHTUL at all. It could almost be called soft rock.
Classic soft rock, mind you, but its still soft.
So what are Led Zeppelin? Straight up classic rock. They're music is really quite accessible, moreso than a lot of modern hardcore, non-MEHTUL bands today. Even their counterparts of their time, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, etc, were a lot heavier than they were.
Am I saying that you absolutely have to like Led Zeppelin? No. But don't make sweeping generalizations about a band/musical genre if you're not fully aware of what you are talking about.
Also I'd like to state, mind you I'm being completely subjective at this point, that I also used to say that I "couldn't stand MEHTUL" a few years back. This was, of course, before I had really ever
heard what it was. I just assumed it'd be growly, yelly vocals, unstructured and unnecessarily loud out of control guitars, and weird cat screeching. So I assumed I wouldn't like it. Then I actually, you know,
listened to it. And obviously I've been quite taken with the entire sub-genre since. Really, MEHTUL, when done in a certain way, can actually be quite beautiful and breathtaking. Take, for example, Within Temptation and Nightwish:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=CdZ8uG_RbSc (Within Temptation's song 'Mother Earth')
http://youtube.com/watch?v=GdZn7k5rZLQ (Nightwish's new single 'Amaranth')
Both songs are clearly MEHTUL, but they are extremely melodic and atmospheric, sung with clean, pretty female vocals. People generally don't think of MEHTUL when they think of a song like this.
Again, am I saying you have no choice but to like these bands? Again, no. I am just simply to attempting to swipe away possible pre-dispositions you or anyone else might have with the genre. MEHTUL is actually very diverse, and while there ARE a lot of MEHTUL bands that suck and fit the stereotype (Cannibal Corpse, Waking the Cadaver, Six Feet Under, could go on for days) it is almost arrogant to simply wipe them all off the map.
I will restate that it could be very well true that you simply hate all music with higher guitar distortion, no matter how it used. I think that's odd, but it is your opinion, and your taste, and I, nor anyone else, is in any position to tell you what you should and should not like. But a sweeping generalization like "I can't stand MEHTUL" (especially when referring to something that is not MEHTUL) irks me. I feel the same way about rap, country, polka, anything; it's arrogant to wipe an entire musical genre off the map.
