Downloading archives

Postby TyVulpine » Wed Jul 18, 2007 11:12 pm

I recall that downloading the archives used to be possible. I bought a laptop yesterday and wanted to download O&M, but don't see the download option anymore...

It's probably to increase sales of originals and the books.
Here is fine, there is good, but DC is my home (IRC is my vacation home that I visit more often than a normal person visits a vacation home.)

Hmmm, true....but not all the strips are in the books. Some of the guest strips for instance.

that doesn't make much sense, since all the strips are there for free there's no reason to withhold an archive of them.

DCS probably just didn't bother putting it there when he switched to Keenspot.

DCS should've ended the comic a year or two ago.

Not to mention the bandwidth usage and lost ad revenue from a big dl like that. Still, a script would be pretty easy to set up, if you don't have a problem with hammering the O&M servers. <.<

Good thing I got most of the archives before it was taken off. However I still buy the books.

This looks like a job for the Wayback Machine! I lost my copy of the archives to a blown-up motherboard, but I managed to get most of the zipped archives from there.

I have the books up to Tofu Knights, but I'd still like to get the archives...

He was updating the archive ZIPs every day... that's tedious work (well, I suppose it could be relatively easy to automate but only if you know how to do such things).

Wait, so you mean there's no PHP at all in the whole O&M site? What happens if he ever decides to change the layout?

So there's no problem with manually downloading the individual strips? I was worrying about that when the ZIP achives disappeared...

no, he used a script that his friend coded for him on the old website. I assume that means he used PHP.

Now, of course, he uses the Keenspot engine.

I assume that means he used PHP.
Seems like an odd assumption, considering that PHP is meant to run as either a CGI interpreter or a module for the webserver (and is not a very good CLI).

Perl, Python, and Ruby, however...

I really don't feel like downloading strip-by-strip...
