September 11th- what were you doing?

Postby Foxhound » Mon Sep 11, 2006 9:05 pm

I know there's already a thread, but I've been reminiscing on that day.

My question is: What were you doing that day?

I was in 4th or 5th grade at the time, but I'll never forget what I saw. I remember hearing nothing about it at school. I remember my mother talking about it, but I brushed it off as a rumor. But then I got home and turned on the news, and the first thing I saw was the one of the planes hitting the WTC. It was surreal. I don't even remember which tower it hit. I just stood there, mesmerised by what I saw. And then it hit me and I couldn't tear my gaze away. I just stared in horror, especially when they showed one of the people falling. It scared me right to the heart. I was never more scared in my life. I went out at one point to talk to a few neighbors to see if they were alright. It was very eerie since no one was out on the streets except for one person. I'll never forget what I saw when I turned the news on that day.

Well, I was in the cafeteria. This was in grade 11, and I inexplicably had the 10 am lunch hour, which sucks.

Anyways, I first heard about it when a teacher came into the cafeteria, and got everyone's attention. She said something about something happening (but not what), and told everyone not to panic. A few minutes later, I asked a friend what she was talking about, and I was informed about a plane hitting the WTC.

I heard bits and pieces throughout the day, really.

I was upstairs at the time, on the computer of course. My mum called me down and showed me the news, which showed the first tower in flames. And she said a plane hit it.
Yet another disaster with a plane crashing into a building, I thought. I had seen that before anyway (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bijlmer_disaster), so I just dismissed it.

Then she called me again to say that a second plane hit it, and I realised that this wasn't an accident anymore. Still, it was far from home, and even so it wasn't the first large-scale terrorist attack I had seen either.

It wasn't until I came back down again and saw footage of the two towers coming down, that I finally figured out that this wasn't really something small. But I had seen similarly world-scale news before (falling of the Berlin wall, anyone?), so after that I just got annoyed by the constant repeating of the news over and over. Sure it was very big, but not so big that you can't get over it. :/

I was sitting in english class at school in 6th grade when an announcement came over the PA. The teacher turned on the TV and I watched as the second plane hit, live.
At the time I had no idea what was happening. WHAT PISSED ME OFF at the time was that the people around me were CHEERING!
The students in my class carried on and were saying stuff like "cool" and just laughing. When I realized what had happend I didn't know what to make of it. It was unreal.
I am afraid of what will happen in my later years when the people of this generation are in power. You think things are bad now. It is only going to get worse. Not only for the USA, but for the entire world. It's frightening and inevitable.

I was between classes at school (Grade 8 ) and they called our class into a large classroom and told us what had happened. They turned on the TV and we watched it. I remember seeing the second plane hit and thinking "Oh my God, this isn't accidental." Ii took me a very long time to believe that it was really happening. When I saw the first tower begin to fall, I couldn't watch any more.

It was 5:30 in the morning in Gambell, when my clock radio turned on. KNOM, the AM station out of Nome, Alaska had already switched over to a constant feed of the AP News satellite service.

It was the second or third week of school, and I was teaching math and the technology courses at the Middle School and high school. I walked the mile to school to get on the internet, and pulled up the nytimes.com site, which had taken a hit in the attacks as well.

I didn't see any video until the 12th, when I watched some coverage on satellite television. Our mail service was cut off for several days because the civilian flights had all been grounded, and are no highways in and out of the village.

Even in really remote places, everything everywhere is connected.

I was working in a call center doing tech support when I heard about it from somebody I was on the telephone with. He told me a plane had hit one of the towers; we both thought it was an accident at first.

Later, I was on the phone with another person when the second tower got hit. We knew right then that it was no accident. We were still on the phone when the towers collapsed. That was a nasty shock for both of us.

Someone brought in a TV and put on CNN; that's when I found out about the Pentagon being hit and Flight 93 crashing in Pennsylvania; and saw the towers collapse.

I was in 11th grade, inside the band hall during 6th period (last period of the day). Then the principal came on over the PA and told us what happend. At first I thought it was some real freak accident, until I realized the four planes crashing in one day was very, very unlikely to happen naturally. I honestly don't remember much about how I felt, obviously I wasn't happy, though.

4th grade, it was a friday. we came back from meeting (I went to a quaker private school, on fridays we went to a little version of quaker meeting in the morning and had and irregular schedule all day) and our teachers announced it to us. I remember at first noticing the seriusness of the teacher and assuming we had been noisy or something during the silence, since they had been a little sad with us about us talking to each other when we weren't supposed to during meeting in previous fridays. I'm not sure many people would understand that, but it's how I remember that it was a friday.

it was a friday
FAIL.

It was a Tuesday. The last time 9/11 was on a Friday was in 1998.

I don't know exactly what I was doing when the planes hit, but I do remember first being informed of it. I was in fifth grade. My best friend came up to me in recess and told me about the pentagon. I can't remember if he said anything about the twin towers.

There was no official announcement about it at my school, but it was still known. Five or so people in my class left in the middle of the day. I was a little scared.

When i first heard about it, i was like, "OMG, the World Trade Center has been attacked AGAIN?!" Needless to say, my aspie intuition was correct in thinking the towers would crash to the ground. The faculty was so shaken by that part, that they allowed us to go home early.

*sigh* If i'd been able to predict this, i would've loved to have climbed to the top of that structure, but ever since i learned how John Lennon died, i was afraid i'd suffer his fate if i ever went to New York City, considering the number of homicides that happen there.

But i'm not afraid anymore. I went there last year so i could see "Mamma Mia." It was expensive, but it was worth it. I also like the city's many pizza joints, and kiosks where you can get an issue of The Onion for free.

I watching the events as it happened on the television on CNN. As the plane hit the second tower I was filled with fear. I began asking myself is this even real?
