I don't really get why people celebrate the 4th of July with such intensity.
I mean, we don't celebrate the Romans leaving, or Normandy invading to create the current line of monarchy, or the end of the War of the Roses, or the re-establishment of the monarchy after the horrid rule under Oliver Cromwell, or the execution of the monarch in order to get Oliver Cromwell into power, or the signing of any of the Magna Cartas, or the unification of England and Scotland, or the subjucation of the Welsh...
Granted, we do commemerate what would have happened had Guy Falks succeeded in blowing up the houses of parliament/celebrate his execution (seriously. The celebration of his execution is a definite part of the fifth of November thing), but we don't make a big deal about it. Go to work/school as normal, gather round a bonfire after dark on a cold and usually wet November evening and set off some fireworks...
