Let's help D. Simpson with syndication
Sigurd - one thing...

I just need to clarify that my point was that syndication doesn't necessarily mean compromising the values of the comic.

I never said those comics were necessarily good. I agree, Boondocks is very heavy-handed.

Frankly, I think most syndicated comics have some value. Some, like Get Fuzzy, are not particularly well drawn but tend to be funny on a regular basis (as well as a little disturbing.) Others, like Boondocks, often have something to say, but that something is often over the top. About the only strips I can think of that I don't at least get something out of now and then are Family Circus and the soap-opera style comics. Even Garfield makes me laugh once or twice a year.

Then again, next to Calvin and Hobbes and Peanuts, it's often hard for an artist to compete. Ozy and Millie is about the only strip I've ever read even in the same league as Waterson and Schultz.
how long do you guys want to wait for a reply from Simpson. I can wait a little longer before i have to contact him, about 2 weeks. I don't want this idea to die on me. I have a lot of ideas seem to do that. Most never seem to make it outta my head before i forget them or something shiney distracts me.
If you've done things right, people won't be sure if you've done anything at all.

Well, here are my thoughts:

1. Wait for Dave to replay and make sure he's on board with all this. It's his comic, get his consent before doing anything that can be remotely professional with it.

2. I agree, syndication doesn't mean selling out or compromise, but think about this: if O&M were syndicated/published, would we really get new strips for a while? Obviously, O&M couldn't just pop up in the papers one day in the middle of a story line and assume that people know what's happening; DCS would probably have to almost start the strip over and re-introduce all the characters again.

3. Building on that, what becomes of the old strips? If they stayed online, would Plan Nine still have right to those strips, would rights be transferred to the syndicate?

I really don't know much about how syndication would work, but those were some of my thoughs. I'd love to have O&M in the paper, but I'd rather it be a smooth transitions. Let's see what's happens.

(On an unrelated note, seems like a lot of inactive and new people posted on this thread. Are more people joining in on the fun?)

can this get me an Official Llewellyn Inaction Figure?
(technically I'm kidding, but this does merit a serious question here)
I don't get out much and don't know what syndication is, but according to previous posts, it's where the comic becomes famous and put in newspapers and gets paid.
and after reading a lot of the posts i have to say:
Wow, I thought that opinion would get me tarred and feathered, but apparently my fears of syndication are legitimate. hmm...

nan dochira ii desu. It's his choice.

don't worry ozymandias, my paper starts right in the middle of most of the strips they're trying out. and they usually explain about it. i just hope my newspaper allows it, since they have this stuck-up 'we don't like good comics that aren't being made anymore' thing.
pants jesus
DCS should've ended the comic a year or two ago.

I don't know the exact exact exact definition of syndication, but it's just the continuous publication or distribution of something every day at least five days a week. Comic strips are one example, TV show reruns before primetime are another.

[...unWARP!!!]

Good evening.

Maybe he should start out small, like, say, a high school newspaper, or at most, a small town.

I wonder what he'd have to say about being in a paper in Latin America....

Until next time, remember:

I AM THE J.A.M.

Good evening.

[WARP!!!]
After several postings on page one, i had said that i was going to try to get O&M into my local paper... and i honestly don't know how much of a long shot it is of isn't. (I'm actually really happy that someone besides me brought this to the front!) I'll try to contact simpson again about this, and hopefully get a positive response. I think our main goal should be to get it in local papers first, and then let the process take its own coarse. If we can get it in the papers, then O&M will surely be noticed by someone with 'connections' to a syndicate.

OK, this is driving me nuts! i've been trying to contact simpson about this for a little while now, but appearently everyone else is trying to contact him too! his inbopx has beeen full for a while now. I understand with the holiday season and all, but that doiesn't make it any less madening. Oh well, nothing to do but keep trying, i guess...
