Why I (and perhaps you) have played less video games of late

And you know what, I agree with him agreeing with them. I like a fun game of CS once in awhile, but I find myself going back to dust off my SNES and play that more often than not. I know this is kinda old (almost two and a half years old now) but still, I remember the days when "violence" entailed people in ninja-suits spraying out two-toned blood after doing some fancy martial artistry, instead of the stuff that approaches realistic today.
Games are starting to get more realistic, but speaking as one who has actually fired a real gun the games are quite a long way off. When possible, I prefer the real thing (REAL shooting vs CS, if I want to shoot someone I go paintball; REAL basketball, REAL running (Though that NES olympic game with that pad you had to run on was fun)

And so on. I'm not saying I want to play game with pong style graphics, far from that, I think I'm done with console gaming for the most part. But it seems there are only so many good games nowadays compared with ones from years back.

Experience wise, there are things you can do in games that you can't even begin to emulate in real life.
Unless you know of a way to play Katamari Demanci rl, or of any surreal nightmare hotels, or of exploding dice, or of giant collossi, etc, etc, etc.
And that's saying nothing of the stories that can be told via the medium of games.
As for games from years back. There was no golden era of gaming. That's a myth. 10-15 years ago, the average game was as fun as the average game is now.
...However I do tend to find that the bad games were horrid whereas now they're mediocre, and the good games were excellent whereas now they're very good. The extremities of the spectrum of gaming are rarer now than they were back then. And I'm not sure if this is a good thing, a bad thing or an inevitable thing.

It all depends on the type of game you're going for.
I LIKE my FPS's to look real, but I don't want to go down the street shooting up "gansta's." I want to be immersed in the game, but I want to be immersed somewhere else. I want to travel to the future, or to the distant past. I just don't want to be HERE and NOW.
For platformers I want to do the same, but not in such a realistic or immersive way. Platformers are played for the fun of playing the game. While I'll admit that some had awesome storylines, I say keep the in-depth stories for the "realistic" games. A really good example here is the Spyro series. Not too much story, but enough to make the gameplay even more fun.
RPG's are the hardest. I don't mind games like Shadowrun that are realistic, but I also loved Mario RPG (The SNES one) and, somewhat, the Final Fantasies. RPG is truly the most flexible genre, as it can encompass anything.
And sdo ends my rant, hope it was as useless as I could make it.

you know they are right. i really dont like playing the old games much more. i like rpgs. i like suikoden 3, and horror like resident evil and parasite eve. but suikoden is early ps2. and the others are ps1.
still i prefer even older stuff. like iron storm, and sonic, and even mario. i have a ps2 hooked up but i only play sonic gems collection...which is all the genesis games for sonic ^_^ that was actually the first thing i got with my first pay check.
then i have my snes hooked up and i play that a lot. i'd play more but its startin to die on me <_<
i love the old zeldas too. if you give me a new game and an old game ya the new one will be fun...but it looses its attraction after you beat it. the old games are good because they never end. they are not the same thing repeating themselves. and its easier for you to get into.
the old just does it for me. i just prefer the old to the new. i feel games now are repetitive and lack the ability to stay good once you beat them.

The games are just as fun, but I HAD my fun playing them. It's the fact that they're as much fun that also contributes...there are less original ideas nowadays because all the other ones were used already. There can only be so many shooting games before they start to get stale, same with other types.
It's the odd, crazy games I like (and I'm getting at), not most hyperrealistic ones. Granted, maybe one day flight simulators will get even better so I can pay a few hundred for that instead of a few thousand for a real plane. But a lot of people probably haven't touched an AR-15 before, much less shot them, or perhaps someone doesn't even have access to a basketball court...so I see your point there. But if you could roll a giant ball with random constructions and other things that stick to them, wouldn't you want to do it irl instead of with a controller ">
(Well, except for the massive property damage you'd cause, along with other fallout)

I can relate somewhat. I have become less interested in video games over the past few years. I own a PS2 and a Gamecube, but I hardly ever seem to use them. However, I'm not sure it's because of how realistic games have become. I do long for the classic games of the Super NES era (I know the other night my friend and I on a whim spent a good chunk of the night with "NBA Jam." Eat it "NBA Ballers" or whatever street game is on the new consoles). There was a certain charm that's been lost since graphics and depth have been advanced since then. Maybe it's just nostalgia, or maybe it's a valid point, I don't know.
In my case, being an avid anime fan and artist who also goes to college and works, I always have other activities I'd rather attend to over games during my free time. When you have a bunch of hobbies, some tend to rule the others out. Though I still appreciate a few current gen games now and again. I fell in love with Resident Evil 4 and became quite the fan of the Sly Cooper series. But the industry seems to be so flooded with military sims and flash with no substance kind of games now, I just feel my attention span's better spent elsewhere.
So with any luck the Nintendo DS will go down in history as the last video game system I've bought.

I just really don't like FPSes. I'm not good at them because they're fast paced kill-people games, and me here I've been raised in a semi-Quaker environment since the age of 5. I like Sid Meier's strategy games (but only civ, col, and alpha) and platformers. I like games like RPGs and other weird stuff every now and then, but not usually long enough to play all the way through. I grew up with my brother and sister having at least eight mario games for the NES SNES and N64, it's kind of expected that I like platformers ^_^;

DCS should've ended the comic a year or two ago.

If you liked that one, I'd recommend geting Suikoden I & II for the PS1. I was kind of disappointed with III when I played it. I think it relied too heavily on graphics, unlike the others, which though they don't look stunning, have two of the best storylines in any game I have ever played.i like suikoden 3
I think games like that, along with Final Fantasy Tactics and Castlevania: SotN (which I've been playing alot lately) that I keep coming back to, kind of seems like the pinnacle of gaming.
While the new systems might have a half dozen games that interest me, the only PS2 games I really played with any regularity after a few months were the sports games. Any other type of game I just kind of beat it and moved on.
I guess what it comes down to is that (for the most part) I prefer simpler games. Though I do play World of Warcraft, it's the only game of its kind that I invest in anymore. And even so I had a period where I got bored with it and took about a month off from playing.
I think another factor is that a few years ago, video games were my really big interest, and now, as most of you know, my biggest interest is in music. I don't really pay attention like I used to and look for the hidden gems in the gaming world. I'm probably missing out on some great games; but I really don't care too much to find out.
With all this being said, it's all just opinion. I feel that the PS1-era of gaming was the peak, and it has been downhill since. Other people disagree. Are they wrong? Of course! (j/k) No they aren't, they just think differently. I think this post is long enough though. So yah! D:
Killin' the first born of lyrical Yul Brynners.
Personally, I like my games from the first person perspective and to have a decent story, not just be killing for the sake of killing. I like them to be like an interactive movie.
Notable games include;
Half-life 1+2
F.E.A.R (scariest game I have ever played)
Chronicles or Riddick
Far Cry
