Someone hit my mom's PARKED car.

A place to talk about anything (that doesn't belong in the other forums).

I think it is illegal to drive without insurance period. In some state the will take your license away if you are (weather it is your car or not). That happened to a friend of mine he borrows his relatives car for like a day and had his license taken away because the car did not have insurance.

My mom does have insurance on the car, except it doesn't cover collisions.

no the guy that hit you is the one that did the damage therefore he should be the one legally responsible, right?

Eh, it might just be a state thing or something but it's illegal to drive without insurace for when you damage somebody else.
We have that for motor vehicles here. Quite frankly, it's the worst idea ever with outrageous car insurance rates.

Let's just hope the insurance company doesn't jip you for the cost of the repairs.
Over in the UK, it is so illigal to drive without insurence, that if you're caught you can have your liscense suspended and spend the night in jail. It's majorly a bad thing.

I think the law was passed to stop 17 year old new liscense holders from "borrowing" their parent's cars, which they then proceed to destroy and kill someone.

Definitely. I can understand where the UK government is going with that. It does make sense when you think about it, how would you like strolling down a country lane in Ireland and suddenly getting hit by an unexpected car? I may be wrong, but it seems that the UK has major population density differnce from place to place in a relatively small area (for a country). I think this could affect traffic laws quite a bit, while the UK probably has a large number of drivers compared to most other European countries, there is still not nearly as many as there are in the US and Canada. I think this is because many people are in walking distance to shopping and possibly work, there isn't as much of a need to drive. Unfortunately this is no longer true in the US even in the rural area I live in. So this is the kind of thing that happens. Probably the funniest thing was the "Conserve Wildlife" NJ license plate on the car that hit. Which means that most likely they borrowed their parents' car. Also there were some sort of stickers on it that said something about the police, meaning that their father was a cop, most likely retired because they only went up to 2003. Its elementary my dear furs  .

Geographical confuzzlement. :P

Anyway, in my state, as is the case in most if not all of them (I think), it's illegal to not have at least liability insurance (collision insurance is optional here and obviously it's more expensive). You don't spend a night in jail though; it's "merely" a large fine. Also, in case of an accident, if one person involved does NOT have insurance that person is AUTOMATICALLY at fault. I'm not sure what happens if all people involved in the accident don't have insurance...

I was making an example of the type of place that there would most likely be a law like that.

The fault of an accident varies depending on the cop, and the state. Some states have a law that if you rear-end another car, you're automatically at fault regardless of the circumstances. For example, if you were sitting at a traffic light, and someone rear-ended you and pushed you into the back of the car in front of you, you would be at-fault for hitting the car in front of you.

Thankfully, the silliness of these laws has shown through and many states are repealing them.

'Tis the season for wrecks, I guess, my beloved Acura Integra was rear-ended this past week by some high school student. Two cars in front of me, some old woman made an abrupt illegal U-turn, and the car in front of me nailed her brakes. I did the same, stopped just before touching her bumper. The guy behind me didn't see my brake lights, and hit me at full speed, pushing me into the car in front of me.

We're still waiting for the insurance adjuster, but the car is more than likely totalled :-\
