This is almost kind of sad. Avery goes out of his way to try and make himself 'cool', it backfires, and he returns to the table, dejected and self-deprecating ("You guys tolerate me" is not a statement of self-confidence). He kind of ruins the effect in the last panel, but for those first three panels I just felt bad for him.

I'm sure DCS did that on purpose. It's actually a pretty funny punchline, so the comic turns out amusing rather than depressing. :wink:

I actually think Avery has no illusions about himself. He knows exactly where he stands in the elementary school social hierarchy; his desire to advance may be misguided, but he isn't delusional.

Millie does the same thing as Avery the few times she gets to be cool. At least Avery is honest about it.
