Is this a thing people say, or said, ever? Because I've never heard it until I read this strip.

Yeah, no, I actually used to hear it when I was younger. Clearly you guys weren't hanging around the right playgrounds.
One of the stupider bits of childhood conventional wisdom. I always wondered about that when kids would say it to me on the playground.

Originally, that was Millie, not Avery. I let a friend persuade me that Avery would be more likely to do this, and made the change. Back then, the character designs were all so similar that converting Millie into Avery was much easier than it should have been. (The characters would become much more distinctive, later.)
That which does not kill me, cripples me for life.

I have used pretty much the same argument as Stephen's when talking to people who espouse naturopathic medicine.

This is something I've heard too. People are stupid.

Eh... I'm not convinced Avery was the right choice for this. I don't think Millie would have been right, but Avery doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would pick up old candy from the ground. Not unless it was something that celebrities were endorsing.

Then again, I can't think of what character would freely go around picking up old candy that fell in the dirt, so... *shrugs*

The Ogden Nash poem "The Fly":

God in his wisdom made the fly
And then forgot to tell us why.

Avery doesn't really think things out and just sort of goes with the flow so I suppose he might eat litter

Following trends IS a big part of his personality, but that doesn't mean he can't have other aspects.
