Amway has come up before, and I still don't 'get' it. I know the basic premise of Amway and what DCS is referencing, but... I just don't understand its usage here...

Maybe its a 90s thing. I remember Animaniacs making a few Amway references. Also, I was invited to an pyramid scheme/Amway sales pitch last year.
Originally, Avery said "Amway won't take you until you're 14" here. Someone wrote in and corrected me. This was useful, as I had never even considered doing any research. But I learned something that day. (Something I have never, in the time since, needed to know, but it could come up some day.)
In the book collection the age was changed to 16.

Look at the first panel for more of Ozy's relentless emotional abuse of Avery. Note how Avery looks the same as he always does but Ozy tells him he looks "almost normal."
