Looks like they're playing volleyball with a basketball back there, and I can say from personal experience that's a terrible idea. It also appears they're chucking the basketballs beneath the net, and the net is set up in the middle of a different court entirely, so maybe they're actually playing a version of basketball where you set up a volleyball net and... maybe they... um...
Actually if PE was this confusing I'd make stuff up to get out of it too.
