I'd like to point out that Ozy didn't ask "why" in the first panel. Not that that fazed Avery away from explaining. I find this strip to be about one of those childhood moments where you think you've just found out some grand truth or secret method.

The hat (turned backwards) would become part of Avery's uniform two years down the line. Here it's an anomaly.

I got that the "why" was implied by Ozy's expression, that coupled with the fact that Avery is paranoid and just wants to explain himself.
It's very Freudian.
