And Ozy is clearly not trying at all to make him feel better about the situation. He's got his nose in a book and is humming 'Ice Ice babby' as a subtle jab at Avery. He's certainly not listening to him, despite having been literally right there when everybody else left.

...

They tolerate him. They don't seem to be friends in any real sense of the word; they all happen to share a lunch table (with Stephan, too, whom I'm also pretty sure they aren't exactly enamored with).
First off, too much buddy, it's just a comic no need to write a thesis on it.

Secondly, they do more than tolerate him. It doesn't go with Ozy's personality to treat him like that. He's honest with everyone, even his best friend Millie. Sometimes he makes a little jab to emphasises his point more, gets that from his father probably.

They do more than tolerate Stephan too, they went out of their way to go to California to bring him back after his delusions of get rich quick in the internet boom. That's more than his own father did.

I thought that Ozy's humming "Ice Ice babby" was simply a way of answering the question Avery posed, and it was less a jab than a way of telling Avery, "See? You're not the only person in the world who has experienced flash-in-the-pan popularity!"

What did you want Ozy to do, throw his arms around Avery and give him a reassuring cuddle and shower him with words of pity? :?

Actually, they didn't go to California. Isolde was already there and phoned them to let them know she found him.

But they were the only ones who noticed or cared that Stephan was missing.

Actually, that would have been pretty funny.

Yes. And then Avery could have given him a really weird look and backed away slowly.

Again, my point isn't that I want them to do something else, just that I think they're being jerks to him. The only objectionable part is that DCS clearly intends us to think they're in the right in doing this, but that's beyond the scope of the comic itself.

That's why I provide a sacast/self-deprecating [/ridiculous over-analysis] tag. Also why I provided a handy tl;dr summary at the end. Yes, it was stupid comprehensive. But I had fun arguing it.

Again, I have only read a smattering of comics in the years to come; this is largely my first time reading any of the strips in the series. I don't have anything from The Future to go by.

If I had had a glimpse of popularity in school and fell like Avery and my real friends from when I was a nerd previously started humming Ice Ice babby I'd probably have laughed it off because it's so appropiate for the situation. If Avery really thought that they were jerks to him he wouldn't keep returning to their group after the people he thinks should be his friends disowned him. I dunno, maybe Avery is just slow.

Avery is not only slow but desperate for attention from anybody even if they are jerks to him
