...you know, I kind of want a Pope Soda. Absolve your sins in the carbonated font of God.

The line was crossed a long time ago. There was an actual advertisement by Bennetton (the clothing company) showing then-President Reagan with Karposi's sarcoma, somehow intended to advertise jeans. There were very angry protests, all right-coming from AIDS activists. Definitely one of the dumb-dumb advertisements of all time.

I, personally, wish the Pope would actually do this.
Who sleeps shall awake, greeting the shadows from the sun
Who sleeps shall awake, looking through the window of our lives
Waiting for the moment to arrive...
Show us the silence in the rise,
So that we may someday understand...

This is one of the strips I remember as making me laugh to tears when I first discovered the comic and was reading through the archives. It's still funny to me.

I always wanted to be the sort of cartoonist who invents words. This was an early attempt at it.

I had a stronger anti-commercialism bent in those days. I'm still mostly against it, but by now I've had some years of having the importance of sometimes making money drilled firmly into me.
