The contest is open to pupils in kindergarten through 8th grade. They must submit a 200-word entry, nominating a color and explaining why they think that hue is best for the Cermak Branch, now part of the CTA Blue Line but to be rerouted in June. Entries must be postmarked by March 17. Looking for the most original and creative essay, the CTA board will select the winner who will not only go down in the history books as naming the line, but also will receive a $1,000 savings bond. All pupils who submit an entry with the winning color will be recognized in advertising cards posted on buses and trains and will have the opportunity to be among the first to ride on the new line. The CTA board voted earlier this month to reroute the Cermak Branch for 180 days to test a plan that staff believes will improve service to the West Side and western suburbs. Under the plan, Cermak Branch trains heading to the Loop no longer will turn east at the Eisenhower Expressway and descend to meet the Forest Park branch tracks before heading to the Loop, passing through the Dearborn Street subway and ending up at O'Hare International Airport. Instead, Cermak Branch trains will continue north along the "Paulina Connector," a section of elevated track parallel to and just west of Ashland Avenue. At Lake Street, Cermak branch trains would turn east and follow the Green Line into the Loop. The trains would travel clockwise around the Loop then return on the Green Line to the Paulina Connector and south to the Cermak branch tracks. The new routing will take effect in June. Cermak branch riders who need to get to O'Hare will be able to transfer at the Clark/Lake station, which they will reach about 10 minutes faster than the current route takes to get there, CTA officials have said. Citing a North Korean man who recently fled to China, South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper said the 21 young women had been detained about last November in the same prison camp where the man had been held. South Korea's National Intelligence Service didn't immediately confirm or deny the report. In 2002, communist North Korea sent hundreds of female cheerleaders to the Asian Games in South Korea's Busan, where their tightly synchronized routines drew worldwide attention. The North sent similar cheering squads to South Korea in 2003 and 2005. The defector, whose real name wasn't given, said the female cheering squad apparently violated a pledge not to speak about what they saw in South Korea, the Chosun Ilbo reported. Citing another unnamed defector, the newspaper said the cheerleaders had pledged before going to South Korea that they would treat the country as "enemy territory" and never speak about what they saw there, accepting punishment if they broke the promise. North Korea's government insists it doesn't abuse human rights, but it has long been accused of holding political prisoners in camps under life-threatening conditions. Teacher Fired After Allegedly Biting Pupil

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- School officials on Tuesday fired a middle school teacher charged with biting a student who would not spit out a piece of candy.

Caroline Kolb has pleaded not guilty to an aggravated assault charge for allegedly biting 14-year-old Garrick Hudson on the back during a classroom scuffle Jan. 11.

School officials conducted a probe and fired Kolb for insubordination and conduct unbecoming a teacher, The Courier-Journal reported, citing a copy of her termination letter.

Administrators had previously warned Kolb to avoid being physically confrontational with students, according to the letter.

A call Tuesday to Kolb's attorney was not immediately returned.

The student's mother said Kolb told her son to stand in the hallway after he disobeyed her order to spit out the candy. When the boy tried to retrieve his books, they got into the scuffle.

According to court records, the boy was treated for a bite wound.
