A heavily pregnant woman is at the centre of an extraordinary legal battle with social workers after she secretly recorded them threatening to take away her newborn babby.

Vanessa Brookes, 34, who is due to give birth early next month, smuggled taping equipment into a meeting with social services officials, fearing they would try to take her babby for forced adoption.

She recorded a social worker telling her and her husband Martin, 41, that even though there was "no immediate risk to your child from yourselves", the council would seek a court order to place the child in foster care.
Huh.

Anyone living in the UK, is this sort of thing unusual, or is that kinda thing just an accepted part of daily life?

That seems kinda unfair really. But I guess it really depends on the circumstances and legal nature of the situation.

It would be probably because the state has deemed them unfit to raise a child. But I don't know enough about the child welfare laws here, however I do know that we're pretty strict.

Weird.

"Raise your kid how we, the government tell you to, or we take it away?"

What a scary place to be a parent.

No, it's more "you've been convicted of every offense under the sun, live in a flat that the RSPCA wouldn't let a dog live, and are borderline medievil".

I think there's a bit of a slant here. It just wouldn't be as outrageous of a news story if it wasn't a bit biased against the government.
I can't say I know what's going on, but I doubt social services would just bust in and takes someone's child.

Also, you were right about the bias. The Telegraph is a massivly Tory paper that lampoons the government on everything.

It's one of those "why couldn't things have stayed how they were in the 1950s" papers that get right on my pantsless nerves.
