Google Video just couldn't compete with the power of Youtube!

They could've. Unlike Youtube, they actually were making money - Google just saw the value to Youtube's userbase as far as their advertising bottomline is concerned.

(This was on the front page of Tuesday's paper; it caught me off guard.)
