Also 50 years old this year, and tied in with Sputnik, is the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank, Cheshire, 3 miles from my hometown. At the time it was built, it was the largest steerable radio telescope in the world (it's still the third largest even now) and tracked Sputnik as well as providing both Russian and US scientists with data.
