Hey Let's Read Calvin and Hobbes - Monday Nov. 18 1985

Calvin looks quite angular in this opening strip, though being this early I suppose that can be forgiven.
This was the first Calvin and Hobbes strip, published November 18, 1985. At the time, I thought it was important to establish how Calvin and Hobbes got together, but now I think this was unnecessary. Of course, when Calvin and Hobbes started, it appeared in about thirty-five newspapers, so not many people saw the first strip anyway. My hometown paper didn't pick up the strip for several months, so I didn't see this strip in the newspaper either. This is one reason I've been grateful for the book collections.
(I'm getting these comics from http://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/1985/11/18/)

(Petition to open a Calvin and Hobbes forum like the O&M Archaeology one)

How does Hobbes know what Calvin and his father are saying?

well, if I recall correctly, his real-tiger form is a figment of Calvin's imagination so he can hear whatever he wants. Alternatively, he's an anthropomorphic tiger in a comic strip so he can hear whatever he wants.

Although I fully support a Calvin and Hobbes forum I have personal experience with the comics syndicate shutting down fansites that post all or a lot of the comics. They probably won't notice the forum, but just a fair warning.

Anyway I like this strip, I agree it was unnecessary to show how they met, but this works as good as any.

We should have the forum named Halvin and Cobbes so that we remain under the radar. But anyways, I totally agree with this.

In all likely hood all that would happen would be them asking us to take the comic down, and if we don't they would get the webhost to do it.

The best way to cloak would be to restrict access to the forum from anyone who isn't a member and host all of the comics on a server that wouldn't track referrer URLs back to us.

I don't think bill Watterson really cares, and the syndicate neither as long as you're not profitting off it; you can read Calvin and Hobbes daily from the syndicate website its self.

The syndicate website cares because you're not being exposed to all the ads they get money from.

The syndicate did, it probably still does. The fansite wasn't making a profit, we were just deemed to have made too many comics avaliable via the forums. The two largest Calvin and Hobbes sites were taken down within a week of each other and the admin of the one I was at said that he would even close the Calvin and Hobbes related parts of the forum even though he didn't have to. Although we were explicitly about the comic there. Here, if we link to the syndicate's approved site there shouldn't be a problem.
