Jon got a life

Since I'm sure many here don't follow Garfield it'll probably come as a surprise to you that Jon is now going steady with the veterinarian Liz. As difficult as that already may be to believe, I don't find the writing all that horrible. Is Garfield getting tolerable?

Jon used to never have a girlfriend, and never be able to get a girlfriend, for years. For the past two years now (I think that's right) he's had a steady girlfriend. It always felt like the kind of thing that was just an arc, and eventually he would go back to being a completely pitiful guy again. But now it's gone on way too long for him to be single again, at least not for long.

But I still kick myself for reading Garfield every time there's one of those stupid looking panels where a human looks really "gross" with their eyes bugged out and all their individual hair strands showing. Or the boring-the-first-time gag about how Jon has horrible fashion sense.

Garfield minus Garfield doesn't work too well when John is dating, but imagining the comics without Garfield or Liz is hilarious.

I would love to see that. Everytime I catch myself reading a Garfield strip, I always imagine what it would be like without the other characters and it's just Jon.

Also, yeah. I read the comics every now and then and it's kind of weird that Jon is dating Liz. Didn't she think he was repulsive at one time? c:

I think it's about time Jon got a break. He's a nice guy.

Also, is just me or is Garfield completely extraneous in this comics? It's as though they wanted to do a comic about Jon but then remembered the name of the strip. And yet, now that the focus is on Jon, the strip is improved. As always, Garfield is better without Garfield.

Character development in Garfield?!

yeah, but screw character development... I don't want Jon to be with Liz T__T she's a jerk to him. She is changing the man! she made him throw out his entire wardrobe and brings him to fancy restaurants where she KNOWS he doesn't fit in and will make a fool out of himself.

I say she should realize that she isn't in love with Jon anymore and then dump him, then Jon calls up Lyman and they start dating. Jon would be an even bigger loveable klutz if he were trying to figure out how to work a gay relationship. now THAT would be character development. I wouldn't mind seeing that happen a few years down the road.

Jon is dating Liz because that's what happened in the two theatrical movies. Jim Davis probably thought it wouldn't make sense for Jon to be dating in the movies and not in the strip. I dunno, makes a kinda sense. At least it's what I thought when the strip first started them dating.

Also, Jon is VERY different in the movies. Not a dork at all. More like a regular guy who's just kinda bland (like the actor who plays him!).
