Johnathan's epic quest for a Mac.

Postby Segovia » Fri Jan 30, 2009 9:30 am

I am sick and tired of being stuck with a PC. It frickin sucks. I so want a Mac because they say that it's one of the best laptops out there and you get what you paid for. What's stopping me is that I am poor and Macs cost like $2,000 which my family doesn't have. So that means I am going to have to save up for months just to get the laptop excluding the case and cables unless I find some package that includes all that stuff.

My PC is lame because it catches viruses so easily so me and my mom had to go to bestbuy to buy this anti spyware so that way our computer wouldn't crash for like the third time. What sucks is that my mom had to disable a bunch of programs on there so that way the program could clear the whole computer from viruses. These programs include Movie Maker which has my chemistry movie that's due today. Before I came on to here I had to re type two days of work into a powerpoint. What made it worst is that I could not get back into movie maker to copy and paste.

And to think that all of this could have been avoided if only I had a Mac.

Well I have to go to sleep already. I have to wake up in like three hours before I have to get ready for school.

The issue isn't with PC's, it's with the porn sites you're surfing. I've dealt with nothing but the occasional use of Windows Defender, and my computer has certainly been exposed to the filth of the internet. I blame the IRC for that.

Take care of your PC, and it will be nice to you. I don't mean to down your idea of getting a Mac, one would be quite suited to someone unable to keep a PC free of adcrap. But it's a waste of your money if that is the only reason you plan on purchasing one.

It's just not that I am getting it for. I really feel like as my work increases from school I feel that I would need a laptop. I been doing movies for Chemistry for about a simester and I have had techinical difficulties using Windows Movie Maker. My friend Vincents movies are awesome and he uses a Mac. He says that the Mac is very useful for movies so if I really want to make good quality movies instead of inadequet slide shows, I would go for a Mac. Plus, there is no way I am getting rid of my PC. It's six years old but it's still operational. I really want a Mac for myself. Who knows? Maybe I get a an internet server with spell check.

I love how you didn't deny that you were getting viruses from shady porn sites.

Just take care of your PC and it will love you back.

If you have issues with movie maker, there's load of free (by torrent :P ) softwares out there for PC's.

Smart surfing goes a long way. Same with random online programs. I've had this PC for 5 years with no virus attacks. The hard drive failed me 3 times, but no viruses.
so me and my mom had to go to bestbuy to buy this anti spyware
Buy? Fail. Antivir or AVG for antivirus, ZoneAlarm for firewall, and Spybot and/or Ad-aware and/or Microsoft Defender for anti-spyware. All free, all effective, all generally much less resource-hogging than the major commercial packages out there (I'm looking at you, Norton).
What sucks is that my mom had to disable a bunch of programs on there so that way the program could clear the whole computer from viruses.
That's not what antispyware software does.
These programs include Movie Maker which has my chemistry movie that's due today.
So why not re-enable the program after the antispyware has done its work? But more to the point, if Movie Maker is somehow interfering with any anti-malware program then there's some deeper underlying issue. I can't think of any reason why it would have to disable a program that doesn't even run unless you tell it to. Either your anti-malware software fails, or your computer is severely screwed to the point that a backup and reformat would be the best course of action.
And to think that all of this could have been avoided if only I had a Mac.
Mac's marketing department really did an excellent job of convincing people that Macs are flawless. They've got issues just like any other computing device, though they may be different than a typical PC problem. Then you've got the issue of software compatibility (such as Microsoft Office which does have Mac versions but may choke on specially formatted documents).

Though this isn't Slashdot, I'm gonna go with a car analogy here. What's happening here is you're saying "Dang American cars, I should have bought Japanese" when really the issue is that you shouldn't be going 120 mph off-road in a mini-van.

Oh yay a computer topic.

You can run a Windows system without problems for a fairly long time (although it does start to slow down noticeably after a year or so). As Dan says, smart surfing and software choices are key. Stop using Internet Explorer; switch to the more secure Firefox. Use AVG Free for viruses, Ad-Aware/Spybot S&D for ad/spyware. Windows Firewall is sufficient for network protection. Don't click dodgy links in e-mails, always cross-reference the safety of any software you download from the internet. Run regular virus scans. Update regularly. It doesn't take much more than that to get Windows to play nice with you.

As for Macs, iMovie and the very expensive Final Cut Pro are both very nice pieces of software, but if you buy a Mac you essentially get a fancy-looking PC with a different OS. OSX isn't too bad, but it's difficult to get accustomed to if you're used to Windows. If you want a laptop for complex video-editing (e.g. of higher standard than Windows Movie Maker) then by all means get a Mac, but be aware that there are much cheaper options if you go PC. Obviously there's quite a lot of good Windows video editing software out there too.

(I use (Ubuntu) Linux. It's not the best choice for video editing, although a new project called kdenlive popped up recently and is looking very promising; both simple and powerful.)

just do a fresh reinstall of windows on your PC, install AVG, and use firefox. I do all that, and the only times I ever get a malware infection, I pretty much know that the website I'm visiting will give it to me beforehand (yes porn)
