SOLVED:
77 : 7*7 = 49
49 : 4*9 = 36
36 : 3*6 = 18
18 : 1*8 = 8

I'll say 3 but that's solely a guess. I was thinking 8 as well but since that's not it and you say pi is closer, well then I'll go with 3. It's way to early in the morning for math.
