Define Cynical Fan Forums

ABC is airing the 31st showing of "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" right now, and it got me thinking. The ratings for the Peanuts specials aren't what they used to be, and since Charles Schultz passed away several years ago, the Peanuts strips ended, and nothing new from the strip has appeared, since it was his wish that the strip not continue past his death. So, I was thinking, is it time to end the annual "specials", at least for five to ten years, and then bring them back, or continue them?

It's always fun to see classics every once in a while, but it gets tiring to see the same thing all the time. If there's nothing new, best to put other stuff on for a while.

I never tire of them myself. However, I also don't make it a point to watch them anymore.

I like peanuts! They are crunchy and full of flavor.

I think they should retire the strips first. Seriously, all but one of our local newspapers still carry reruns, and I don't Linus's little brother. It's bad enough that papers still run comics like "Hagar" that stopped being funny or interesting twenty years ago; at least get rid of the ones that are already retired, whydontcha!

As for the specials... it depends. I'd like to see "A Charlie Brown Christmas" keep airing, as long as they're going to keep running every other fifty-year-old Christmas special. I don't really pay much attention to what-all other specials they have on for the other holidays.

On the subject, its not about whats funny or not funny. Its about who the syndicates can rely on to consistantly produce strips. Strips like Bloom County and Calvin and Hobbes were great but because they were so great the artists had leverage to take sabbaticals and eventually just got tired of doing it and quit.

The comic peoples would rather have a mediocre comic that they could count on to produce strips for excess of thirty years or whatever than an excellent comic thats going to burn out after ten.

Taken out of context, Peanuts specials are made of fail. If not for the nostalgia factor, they're crap.

But rerunning the popular specials makes as much sense as showing other holiday-themed movies every year on TV. Which network is it that plays <i>A Christmas Story</i> for at least 24 consecutive hours every yule?

You leave Rerun alone. Nobody likes him because he isn't funny and looks too much like Linus but I will defend him to the death. He was the only new sibling to be born in the strip in like 30 years and unlike Linus he had the decency to not suddenly become Charlie Brown's age for no reason

They're only shown once a year after all. I don't watch them anymore but it's nice to know they're still going. It's not like there aren't other cartoons/movies some channels always put on those special dates.

As for the strips, retire them - if just to let some new talent have some space.

I think it is time for the strips to be retired but I would like the specials to stay on.

It's tradition and if that's ever changed, I'll bomb the ABC station. Those people owe me anyways.
