Abstraction in Art

It's a nice strip but I must confess I never really liked paintings that showed things in a non-realistic way. Especially the kind of paintings (for example) where there's just three coloured stripes or blothces of spilled paint. I don't know what -ism they're forced under but I always like a painting better when it's drawn realistically.
This got me thinking. So what kind of art do you like? Here are three example pictures for the poll:

#2Image
#3Image

Now these examples are by me (except the photo, which is by my dad), so you if you are so inclined, you can indicate your displeasure with my (perceived or otherwise) lack of talent or with the art world in general by picking the fourth option.

Cameron is awesome because:
-Because he has an artistic style that is both complex and minimalist. This is profound!
-He once drew me as a roadrunner. It was an actual honest to god feral roadrunner, but a roadrunner nonetheless!
-He lives in Idaho among the wilderness and stuff and I envy him for that. 3:
-He is probably one of the most personable artists on here.
-I think he's the only one of us on here who drew a fanart that made it as a guest strip on O&M. This is an accomplishment!

Myself, I like it all if it's done well - however, too much of 'abstract' art... well, where's the skill? Good as it is, could the same result have been arrived at by entirely random means? For example, I really like that first abstract there, but... not knowing it was done by you, how would I know it was done by a humans intent at art?

What is there to differentiate 'good' abstract art from 'bad' abstract art, for example. If 'everything' is art, then nothing is.

Poke around here a bit: http://www.artrenewal.org/ even if you don't agree with a lot of what they say, they certainly have many valid and valuable points.

We have to choose just one of those? How would you classify Salvador Dali, who combines realism with impossibility?

Probably comes under the category of "Woah. Dude."

I like representational abstract the most. I just don't "get" art thats various Barbie doll pieces in jars of formaldahyde or a pile of garbage titled "Self portrait" or anything like that.

I'm not opposed to completely representational pieces though.

Of course not. That kind of art is just the artists ridiculing people's ideas about art. Personally, it is extremely stupid.

Me too. It seems to have the most range for expression and interest because of the many different ways you can draw the same thing.

To Luke B.:I'll respond to your post in a little while after I've thought about it for a bit. Don't worry, I'm not ignoring you!

I don't like choosing just one, but if I had to, I'd go with #2.

Apparently I'm in the majority by picking #2. I like a bit of each type, really, but if I could only ever view one type of art, it would be representational abstract.

I picked #2 just because of those images I like #2 the best....but I think the key is that IMO evey art style has its place. It is hard to say that one style is always better than any other style all the time.
cheers.....

if it's just pure scribbles, I don't see what makes it any different from shii. My sister did an abstract painting of a blanket, and I saw it as a human profile. It's all up to interpretation, but I'd prefer art to actually mean something rather than express false emotions with thoughtless meaningless brush strokes.

DCS should've ended the comic a year or two ago.

Personally, if the only thing that makes something 'art' is the fact that it's framed... *shrugs*

It may be art, but I have a hard time respecting the talent of the artist. I mean, there are a pure-abstract expressionist artists I respect, but when it gets to the point where you can't tell one from another, or you can't tell if it's art or something scrapped off the ground... Meh. Doesn't do it for me.

All three styles can be good, I couldn't pick one because after too much of it you get bored of the style.

"You Suck" seems to be a surprisingly popular choice...

Only in the sense that it tied with option three and that it was the only none/all of the above kind of option available.

Yeah, I don't take it personally. But whoops, I forgot to put "all of the above" as an option.
