Stupidest computer problem ever

I've been having a computer problem and I was wondering if any of you could shed some light on the problem and/or point and laugh at me.

When I'm playing some DVDs that I have sometimes the movie will freeze or start skipping as if it were in scene-by-scene. Jiggling the computer (A compaq R4000 notebook) up and down a little makes the movie flow at a regular pace. At some points of the movie more jiggling is required.

These same dvds play fine in a dvd player and the problem only happens with dvds and not with music cds and not with movie files that are saved on my computer.

The only answer that I've been able to come up with is that my computer hates me.

Give it to me straight doc. What's your diagnosis?

You're both full of vicious lying lies that aren't cost efficient.

Number 1: wouldn't lying lies be the truth?

Number 2: My DVD players themselves do that occasionally, but its usually because of low quality DVDs or scratches.

Number 3: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA your beat! Your computer sucks

DVD player is the problem, probably unbalanced at higher speeds.

Y'see, the answer to that is.... OMIDIETY! LOOK A DISTRACTION!

I hope it's not because of scratches. Some of the dvds that skip are fairly new.
Number 3: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA your beat! Your computer sucks
Oy! Don't mock Hal!

Your ideas intrigue me and I wish to learn more. How would I balence it?

I'd blame the DVD player too.

I'd say it's a problem with the drive if motion sets it straight. Seems that for some reason, the disc is being read too slowly, or is running too quickly and is therefore unstable. There may be a way to adjust the read speed of the drive. (You could try CD-ROM Tool, which may work with your drive.)

Still, you should try different movie playing software. Try VLC, PowerDVD, WinDVD, etc. Also, check Task Manager when the movie is playing to see how much CPU is being used.

I'd probably just buy a new DVD drive. They aren't really that expensive anymore.

Do you honestly sit there and jiggle your computer while watching DVDs? Heh.

That would be really bad for the hard drive.

How the hell did you find out that jiggleing it up and down makes it run smoothly? I really want to know the thought process...
