Well I've been fiddling around with various tools and I made these nifty little (well, my first attempt was 12mb, so < 2mb for each of these two is little by comparison) gifs from the latest Stargate SG-1 episode. Whee :D

I haven't watched Stargate SG1 since O'Neill left. Not because he left, but because Battlestar Galactica came out and it's well better :wag:

This is a cool thread...heh.

How about some O'Neil Gifs, or maybe Sheppard and McKay?

I'll see what I can do. :)
(Mod edit: Don't hotlink to images of such large file sizes. Not everyone here has broadband.)
What do you think "Dialup users need not apply" was supposed to mean. :X

Besides, there are fewer and fewer reasons nowadays to use dialup. A good broadband service costs as little as bad, expensive dialup (yes AOL users, I'm bashing AOL). The greatest reason might be accessibility, but even out in the middle of nowhere even satellite internet (*shudder*) must be an option. Cable, DSL, FiOS, and wireless technologies are expanding their coverage areas very rapidly. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of internet connections in big cities (including desktop PCs) were made wirelessly to WiFi/WiMAX hotspots in a few years.

[Edit: I figured out why my above gifs aren't exactly "smooth"... mplayer was dropping frames! My future anims won't suffer from this problem]

Fine, the next time I mod one of your posts I'll leave my name. Happy?

You're not the only one to post large files that got taken down, by the way; anyone who posts a large file will get modded. Ask another mod if you don't believe me.

And he was stealing bandwidth from another site. Since they were lage files, he was stealing a lot of bandwidth. That's a big internet no-no. For shame!

I'd have seconded that. First of all, those images soak up a lot of bandwidth even if you have something better than dialup. I'd rather take the images in at my own pace rather than have the first one slow down while the other two are loading. Second, stamping up a "dialup users need not apply" produces an unwelcome sign from you and from everyone else associated with this forum. This site must be fairly reasonable for our guests to navigate and skim, and posting large image files inline brings us away from that goal. Third, just in case you fail to understand this, Zaaphod is not singling you out. We moderators have been doing this same thing for others who have posted images that take too long to load.

By the way, I thought it was obvious that us moderators use special colors for our activities... Zaaphod's is blue, mine is purple... I don't recall seeing any of the others using a mod color. Because of this habit, it's fairly obvious who made the edit, even without our names entered explicitly.
And he was stealing bandwidth from another site. Since they were lage files, he was stealing a lot of bandwidth. That's a big internet no-no. For shame!
Actually, I believe that that is MAZZTer's website. The bandwidth is his, so nothing's stolen except the time we spend downloading parts of his site.

I just prefer a person edit my post rather than the faceless "moderation team". :X

 Um you are joking right? Please tell me you're joking.

I know... but... he colored my post. >_<

I suppose I'm kind of irked because if I wanted to create honking huge GIFs that's relatively easy to do, but instead I chose to size them down nice and small and choose short clips in order to get the file size down to a point where they'd load speedily over most broadband, and thus it would be feasible to place them inline on a webpage.
Second, stamping up a "dialup users need not apply" produces an unwelcome sign from you and from everyone else associated with this forum.
Huh? I don't see what you're seeing, apparently...
  1. My posts are my own. If I paint a negative reflection of myself it would not reflect badly on the whole forum unless everyone else reacted similarly. Whenever I see someone trolling or otherwise acting like an idiot, I don't think "Gee that person and everyone who replied to him are idiots"... unless of course, they are.
  2. The thread cannot be adequately enjoyed if you have dialup (the pictures would take too long to load, even if you did load them one at a time). Hell, whenever I have to use 56k, I can't adequately enjoy ANYTHING. It's like going from Hershey's to tasting REAL quality chocolate... you just don't like Hershey's as much anymore.
  3. It is hard to convey casual-ness over the internet, but my warning tag was not meant as a KEEP OUT label, rather just a friendly warning that the page was not 56k friendly, continue at your own risk, etc. I had THOUGHT this concept was universally understood.
By the way, I thought it was obvious that us moderators use special colors for our activities...
Actually, I honestly thought you guys were just color happy. :X Whenever I saw you guys use color (even before the end of your post) I thought "Gee, those guys need to cut back on the color."

Also, just in case this also isn't universally understood, "Anonymous Coward" is a slashdot thing. Don't take it personally... >.>

Oh well, I guess that dispels a couple things me and you thought were ubiquitously understood. :p

I can't think of a good O'Neill visual thing... which is probably because most of his best stuff is in audio form.

So...

Wait what?

Warnings for people on 56k are there so they know that they'll have a lot of loading time.

Like on other forums where I quickly dug up the following:
I kissed a wolf today. [56k] ( 1 2 )
Post pictures of you and celebrities! (56k no) ( 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 ... Last page )
What I Did For My Summer Motorcycle Vacation (long, 56K Stays Home) ( 1 2 3 )
Let's Play Startropics! [56k yo-yo-less] ( 1 2 )
Let's play Space Quest [56k, not a chance] ( 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 ... Last page )
Let's play MGS2: Sons of Liberty! (56k gets controlled by The Patriots) ( 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 ... Last page )
You guys are weird!
