Define Cynical Fan Forums

Ok, so I'm building my site on Dreamweaver, so I don't need help there.<br><br>But, I have no idea how to actually get it from my PC to the interweb...I know some of you more web-savvy people here have your own websites and the like so I need to know a few things.<br><br>1 - Who do I go to for a good host?<br>2 - How much server space will I need for a webcomic that's going to be (hopefulyl) updating twice a week?<br>3 - Anything else that you think I'll need to know, and considering what little I do know, that;ll be anything you can think <!--emo&:wag:--><img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... ailwag.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tailwag.gif' /><!--endemo--><br><br>Cheers, Rooster.

I <i>was</i> a web designer, I cant help you with the hosting questions, but I can offer a few tips.<br><br><br>-Make the page/skin's filesize small, going to a site that takes 3mins to load is no fun <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... ns/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo--><br>-Make sure it works in ie/firefox<br>-Check out CSS/XHMTL [dreamweaver has tutorials] they can create great looking sites with a small loading time.

Not too long ago, I stumbled upon a free host called <a href='http://www.sitesled.com/' target='_blank'>SiteSled</a>. I don't know how well it will works, as I'm saving it for when I need a free site for something else. If you don't need PHP support or any fancy options, <a href='http://www.0nyx.com' target='_blank'>0nyx</a> is also an ad-free hosting service, but they don't have FTP support, stats, etc. -- just a Web-based upload system plastered with ads (but they won't put ads on <i>your</i> site).<br><br>As far as uploading files, most hosts have two ways of doing it: (1) a panel you can log into on their site and upload files like you upload pictures in deviantART; and (2) a username and password you can use in an <i>FTP client</i> like <a href='http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/' target='_blank'>FileZilla</a>, which looks and acts a little like Windows Explorer -- just drag the files you want where you want.<br><br>Size: My site's been running for a while now; after 42 strips, I have amassed 3 megs of data. At that rate, a server like 0nyx or SiteSled that offers 100MB total, at 104 strips a year, would still take 13 years to fill. This is assuming you don't add special junk that would take up a lot of space, like Flash cartoons.<br><br>Hope that helped.

If you're an absolute beginner like me check out Yahoo's Geocities. It has a phenomenally simple tool you can use to make all sorts of things with. It does require you to put ads and only provides 15MB for the free account though. I know there are better free providers out there, I just referenced Geocities because of its ease of use.

Alternatively, if size isn't too much an issue, most ISPs offer a limited free amount of space (typically around 10-20MB)

dajoob.com apparently doesn't have an actual limit on space but rather just has all the users share the hard drive space they give them, and will let you use your own domain if you want.

Don't use Geos***ties, they're crap.<br><br>I'm not sure I have room for a webcomic on my server, but I have access to another server I can put you on. Send an email to me and we can discuss it more off-board.

They seem to be, if you want to pay for it. For the base price of 1.25 a month (pounds), you get 200MB space and 10GB bandwidth. I don't know how bandwidth works out to users per whatever, but I wouldn't worry about that for now.

My whole server (including House Rules, I Read This, Furry Teens, Lupinia, Appalachian VW, and some other miscellaneous hosted files) draws 7-8gb of bandwidth per month. 10gb ought to suit you fine until your comic becomes huge like O&M <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... /smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
