Not bad for wrasslin', huh?

A place to talk about anything (that doesn't belong in the other forums).

If you ask most people, they'll tell you that professional wrestling is mindless entertainment. And they're more or less right. But every once in a while, something will happen on a pro-wrestling show that is almost profound in it's own bizarre way.

Take what happened this past Monday on WWE Raw;

I'm a fan of pro-wrestling, and one individual in the wrasslin' business (and that's exactly what it is, a business) that I hold in the highest admiration is Mick Foley. Mick Foley, for those of you who don't know, has wrestled all over the world and is famous for his "hardcore" style of wrestling, which is why he's often referred to as "The Hardcore Legend". But he's also an author of some renown, and several of his books have made the New York Times Best-Seller list, including his autobigoraphical works, "Have A Nice Day: A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks" and "Foley is Good and the Real World is Faker than Wrestling". Long story short, Mick Foley is probably one of the most intelligent and well-spoken people to ever lace a pair of boots.

Anyway, he's long-since retired from wrestling, but every once in a while, will make a special appearance on one of World Wrestling Entertainment's television broadcasts, like his did this week on their Monday night program, "Raw". The purpose of his appearance was to appear on "Carlito's Cabana", which is a sort of "talk-show" where the host, Carlito, interviews different wrestlers. Carlito, again for those of you who don't know, is a "heel" or a "bad-guy" wrestler who's gimmick is that he considers himself to be an expert on "cool". Furthermore, when he sees someone who he considers "not cool", he likes to take a bite out of an apple, chew it up and spit in that person's face.

Anyway, he was about to bite into an apple and spit it into Mick Foley's face when Mick went on to say something that... Well, see for yourself;

"I know you like to spit apple in the face of people who you don't think are cool, Carlito. Well, you go right ahead and spit on me, because it won't be the first time I've been spit on And what's more... I've never TRIED to be 'cool'. I've never tried to look cool, act cool, dress cool or talk cool. But you know, it's funny, when someone gets through talking to me, while they're walking away, more often than not they'll say to themselves 'You know, that Mick Foley is a pretty cool guy.' Now you, Carlito... You go out of your way to look cool, act cool, dress cool and talk cool. But when someone gets through talking to you, while they're walking away, more often than not they'll say to themselves 'You know, that Carlito is a horses ass!'"

Professional wrestling might be mindless entertainment, but when someone who went through their childhood and teenage years never having been thought of as 'cool' or 'popular' hears something like that... Well, it gives them a lot to think about.

Mick is one of the better wrestlers WWE had, and he's definitely one of more highly respected.

My guess is that too is planed and/or scripted. It's nto only jocks that watch these events. There are plenty of nerd and geeks and other non-mainstreem peopel who watch this. This may be giving them somthing to feal better abotu watchign this. They can chear, root, and feel better abotu themselvs. It's good markiting to make you audiance fealg ood abotu themselvs. This sounds prety cynical but I am very cynical. It might be legit but I wouldn;t be surprised if it wasn't.

I am aslo of the belife that most "pro-wrestelers" are intelegant. They're almsot alla ctors and acting usualy requires intelegance especialy if it;s improv. That's all it is anyways, improv acting. Soemtimes it makes sence to play the dumb role, and other times ti make sence to play the smart role. If you get a large protion of yoru audiance form un-educated menial workers and high school students then it woudl make sence to usualy play the dumb role. That makes your audiance seam more intelegent.

A not abotu beign ont eh New York Times best seller list: if a whole mass of people buy a book because it's suboaaably published by a hero that participates in a medium that has a larger audiance than books do then it woudl inflate the numbers irreguardless of the quality of the book. That statistic can then be used as a markletign tool. Also peopel buying bulk quanities of a book soly to increase it's numbers is soemthign that is done regularly. That's nto to say frequently but it isn;t a reare thing etiher.

Once again I shoudl point out that I am very cynical.

Oh yes, one last thing. The dramatic structure behind the WWF is amazing. It's great and very itneresting. For me I cna;t seporate out how they fill out that structure. Taht is soemthgn that turns me off ot the whole thing.

Well, take it for what you will. I just thought I'd post that because it seems like something Ozy and/or Millie would appreciate hearing.
