House Rules...team?
Moderator:Æron
Hm, how to start up this topic.

Well, a little tiny bit ago, I was PM'd by allison, who asked about helping me with House Rules. I read them at...oh...6 am in the morning, so my mind was a bit flubbed and still asleep, so I was thinking "Eh I dunno, I'd really like to do it all myself."

Now that I've had my morning sustenance and am actually awake...I've thought more upon the idea of having help with House Rules. Even more so now that DCS has kicked it back up to 5 days a week.

Here are the problems I am thinking of right now, but also some possible fixes for them.

Storylines - I myself would prefer if only one artist does a specific storyline, as it is noticeable that each artist who has displayed an excellent strip has a 'slightly' different style about things. That way when the main page is updated, your 90% likely to get the next strip in the storyline, and not a random strip from the archive.

Two problem arises from that...how often should the page be updated, and how many strips should each update be?

If there are multiple artists on seperate storylines, each update could either be a single strip going on a storyline until that one is done, or a three-strip update. Whichever choice is done would effect how often the page is updated.

A daily update is what I would like if I brought in a couple people to help with House Rules. I'd have to figure out how to do the whole thing with three artists, as all webcomic collaborations I've seen are mostly writer/artist, not artist/artist/artist.

ON THAT NOTE. I don't want a huge House Rules team. I'm thinking a trio is best. That would be myself and two others.

But...how would I choose who would be in and who wouldn't? That's one of the toughies...there are a few who I see as having the skill and apt in doing these...though they, and myself, have pointers we need to work on.

Now then...questions and comments from everyone? If you'd also like to post your colorings here, I'll critique em a bit and point out stuff to work on...think of this as both a questioning post and a 'signup' post.

Well - heh - it should be clear I'm interested.

The entire storyine idea is a very good point. Daily updates would be fantastic, and much more realistic with a 'team.'

Possibly, we could have people working on strips all the time, and not neccesarily put them up the instant they're finished? That way if one member of the team went MIA for a while, on vacation or whatnot, there would be a whole stash of colored strips to use?

Here, I'll post my strips (again?)

Feel free to tear them apart. EDIT: nevermind, fixed the tongues.
Ooo! I really like the bright, cheerful coloring on those strips, allison!

Quality coloring, as far as I can see. The rubber chicken need some red in it though, for the thing on it's head (whatever it'scalle).

Thanks, you're right - I was thinking the same thing, but the original lines had it colored in black and I wasn't sure whether or not it would be okay to mess with the lines and get rid of the black fill and make it red. Decided not to take the chance
Was hoping you'd be awake, allison.

Your colorings are excellent, though a few points need to be worked on

Lines : A thing I notice between DCS's color and noncolor strips is the completion of lines, especially for the mouth area. (See first line in attatched image). This is where adding in lines is essential, as one color suddenly shifting to another doesn't look as good.

Tongue : Little details are key. Don't forget to color tongues, even if its only a pixel or two showing. (first line, again)

Glasses : As I saw you did just fine with Ms Mudd's glasses. Llewellyn's glasses, though (line 2), are slightly different in the fact that the lens doesn't color his eyes (since they'd look...odd that way). Create a new layer, screen 100%, and link it to the color layer. This way it only effects the color layer and not the black and white layer =)

Something I like to do with tail-swishes like Millie has in the Locke strip there is to fade out the outer images, like an after-image, and keep the 'streak' white. Just looks cooler.

Fix those sorts of things up and you'd be excellent for the team.

Thanks very much, Caigan. I just couldn't find a reference for Llewellyn's glasses. Also, I did add color to the tongues and fix Millie's face coloring (the white part of the face) a little while ago. That was my first strip, which is why it was a bit different.

I actually debated about the tail "swish" being white for a while. I'd also be interested in helping. but in a slightly different way. You see, the House Rules archives are severly lacking in the early strips. If possible, I'd like to help remedy this issue.

Here's what I've done so far:

And yes, I realize that the colors are a bit different. I created my own pallette from the colored 1998 strips. Also, the Ozy's color line was the same as Millie's until October 15, 2000. I was essentially trying to recreate them as if they had been colored at that time.

EDIT: Fixed the copyright info
