But seriously can someone with the proper capabilities deal with the spambots soon? It gets tiring having to delete 20 odd posts every time I come back to these boards, like some particularly tedious game of whack-a-mole.

Sorry guys! I've been kinda busy. I can probably give Angela and Jack permissions to delete accounts, there are a lot of buttons in phpBB3.

EDIT: Æron, Jack and Angela, you all now have the ability to ban, and also permissions to delete users (but don't ask me how you actually do that).
