Say, where did the link disappear to?
I thought the topic was dying, so I took off the link because I thought everyone who needed it had already got it. Sorry!
GRRRR....I hate it when I search forums or look at threads and links are ether broken or images are broken, or in this case plain edited, if you post it IMO you should be willing to keep it posted as long as the forum is alive. Needless to say here is a new link to the file:

WinZip
Ewwww shareware.

I prefer this.
And I prefer this Image

But before you point out that tar archives are not compressed, I'll point out the z and j options add gzip and bzip2 compression...
I am with you RKN....tar is the shit. "tar -czf" is the only compression I do. Obviously I am willing to do bzip2 and stuff but .gz is good enough for everything I am compressing.
cheers.....

Sorry! I would like to apologize for my actions. Can I still be on the forums, Mister Administrator?

We will just count this as strike one....3 strikes and you are OUT! ;-)

Just playing of course. I just know that has happened to me quite a few times.
cheers.....

That they do, but 7zip is nicer, not only because it includes the awesome 7z, it also does bz2 and gzip. And a GUI.
The GUI is probably why I avoid it, then. Command line tools have less bloat. And since it's a file management task, the CLI feels more natural.

I depends on what I'm compressing. If I don't foresee myself accessing it for a very long time, and rarely if at all even then, I'll spend the extra time using bzip2 just to pack it down a bit more. But when we're talking about competition with the PKZIP format's most popular utility, GZip wins paws down.

7z a -t7zip -mx=9 rkn.7z "Richard K Niner"

(7-zip comes with a CLI EXE.) Image

So what you're saying is that Hot Female Kelix has been erased from existence and is not available in her full, high-res glory anywhere. Is that what you're telling me? I FEELS SO BETRAYDED! D:

7z a -t7zip -mx=9 rkn.7z "Richard K Niner"
Seems kinda verbose just to, well, perform a single action (is that append?).

tar czf foo.tgz bar

Much terser, eh? (And if we're talking about adding a new file called "bar", replace the c with A)

Eh it's "add" which basically means create a new archive. That first parameter determines the "mode"... add, update, extract, test, etc.

-t defines the file format (7zip, zip, gzip, etc).

-m defines compression parameters (x defines a simple level of compression from 0 to 9 and automatically determines the other parameters such as dictionary size etc)

Then we have archive name and filenames. Not too complex once you learn the syntax.

I love leveraging 7z CLI with the FOR command to make tons of archives at once (IE to compress ROMs in individual archives for use with emulators that support compressed ROMs). Image

I do admit I like how tar can call gzip and bzip2 though. Image And since it comes with Linux I just use it anyways. But on Windows 7zip is my friend. Image

By the way, I made a theme for your emote script thing you gave me. Now I have SA emotes at my beck and call!
Image

(Just be warned not all the emotes at that link are kid-friendly. Some are downright offensive. Image )

"add" sounds more like it would mean "add to an existing archive".

-r is append to append files to a tar archive....though if memory serves you can only append to a tar archive that is not compressed. When I was working on some backup software i found out also you can append to an uncompressed tar archive just by appending using a cat too.
cheers.....

That's a pretty cool pic of course. If anyone wanted to draw me I would want them to do it in human-form, but I don't want to put anyone through the trouble of that since its not really necessary.

Who sleeps shall awake, looking through the window of our lives
Waiting for the moment to arrive...
Show us the silence in the rise,
So that we may someday understand...

Well, maybe. But I am probably not the only one who finds it tedious to do:
"tar xvf foo-ver-9778-lin-src-2.3.8.7777-new-svn-daily-18052007-dev.tar.gz"
(Although bash's tab-complete feature gets around that somewhat)
