If you go further back it's more of a spiritual thing.<br>As in certain animals were really special and maybe had special powers over things.<br><br>Like in native Australian Dreamtime stories, those were full of animals talking and communicating with other animals and people and everything. There were quite a few macrofurs as well. But they were all feral, they weren't humanoid or anything as far as I know. And these stories was pretty much the Bible to them, told to offspring from generation to generation.<br><br>Nowadays it's more "Hey, I really dig this animal, fur is cool too, I wish I had fur, and a tail, and a muzzle oh man!" But it's not taken seriously. If it is then it's getting into the were side which I don't know a whole lot about.

This topic has got to make its way into an experimental college course: "Hisfurry of the World." I'd teach it if I got the chance.

I wonder if it'll finally get it's own forum too. I've always wanted a place online where I can talk about O&M.

two glompers in two posts don't constitute a "glomp squad"....<br><br> <!--emo&:glomp:--><img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... /glomp.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='glomp.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:glomp:--><img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... /glomp.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='glomp.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:glomp:--><img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... /glomp.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='glomp.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:glomp:--><img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... /glomp.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='glomp.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:glomp:--><img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... /glomp.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='glomp.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:glomp:--><img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... /glomp.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='glomp.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:glomp:--><img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... /glomp.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='glomp.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:flee:--><img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... s/flee.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='flee.gif' /><!--endemo--> <br><br>>:D

There were furry gatherings and publications in the 80s.

Like I said, it depends if you're talking about the fandom or anthropomorphic attributes throughout history (and prehistory). If you go by fandom I think Vootie (if I remember the name correctly) was published first in the 70's.

Ngwoerf. [stand shakily with help from a table] Guys, please. That pun...was my impression...of what you'd find...in a college exco name. I didn't expect...you to find it...clever. [flops]

My guess is that peopel ahve been assoitaing themslevs with animales ever since they were animals or were created. A more pointed question would be: when was the term "furry" or "fur" fist used? Maybe it can be pinned down to a spacific reference that the emoticon, maybe ti can;t. IT would be itneresting to know.

As you can see, "furry fandom" as such does predate the Internet.

There are some ancient Eygptian Anthro Tapestries I've seen at a Musem One of a Lion Playing chess (or some game like it) with a Gazzel, winning and taking victory to the bedroom<img src='http://www.smithsonianmag.si.edu/smiths ... e_lion.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
